everyone seems to be set on giving every album a grade from 0-10 which is invariably and inevitably skewed and biased... reviews always seem to be from 8-10 with the occasional 6 given to songs not liked (that is, reviews here always end up being silly stuff like 9.4/10 for NGHFB cos Be Here Now was 9.5/10, etc...)
how bout just rating the songs based on whether they exceeded, met, or were less than your individual expectations? on that simple three-point rating scale i think you can get a much more accurate reflection of the album in the public eye
everybody's on the run Exceeded[/u] dream on Less[/u] if i had a gun Met[/u] death of you and me Exceeded[/u] record machine Less[/u] what a life Less[/u] soldier boys and jesus freaks Less[/u] broken arrow Met[/u] wrong beach Met[/u] stop the clocks Exceeded[/u]
which is weird looking back as start-to-finish i thoroughly enjoyed the album... maybe a case of the sum being better than the individual parts?

That's a much worse way because it only addresses your expectations, not the actual merit of the songs. There are too many flaws to list in your system.

Yes... this is actually a much worse way to rate the album. What if I went into this thinking the album would be the best thing I've ever heard? Or complete shit? There's no common measure to rate the album between two different people, in your case.

What if I didn't have any real expectations? Or if I ate up all the hype to the point of madness? Then my rating would come out all jacked to hell based on this theory. Sorry, but it falls short to me. Good thought though.

I don't like it either
For instance SB&JF exceeded my expectations because I expected it to be a bit meh...but I really liked it so it would be marked exceeded
On the other hand I expected to love IIHAG and I do so that would make it met.
So does that mean that SB&JF is better because it exceeded expectations? Not really.
I was trying to think of a song that I expected to be great that disappointed me...but so far there isn't anything
Also for TDOYAM...that came out before a review or anything about the tune was known but the title. I had no expectation of that tune. So what exactly should I put for that. How exactly could YOU have had any expectations for it to have exceeded from a title?

This system fails on songs we had to inclination about prior to the albums (like BA, SBAJF, etc).....You can't meet an expectation if the expectation didn't exist in the first place.
