I like a majority of the lyrics but there's a few that make me cringe and nearly ruins the songs

Nit picking, really....
"baby doll" is an actual phrase. Think it's retro-American, actually.
The lines you picked out for Beach are inconsequential - the lyrics there aren't important, it's the sound for that part that matters the most. And the lines, while simple, relate to the story. No idea what the problem is?
You would be advised to pick out worse couplets in the future, like Room/Moon in IIHAG.....

"Oh me oh my I think I'm out of battery" is pretty bad, the song does get better from there at least.

DO's lyrics are the worst...but Noel already knew they were rubbish. It's a fun song anyways.
Other than that...the lyrics are actually really strong.
For that SB&JF line "Off and on I used to hear the call/but she was just a baby doll"
I think it's actually referring to things like statuettes of Mary. Being raised Catholic I know how massive an icon Mary is in religion. She is as much a rallying cry as Jesus to many. Or maybe read up on Our Lady of Guadelupe and you'll get it. It's the image and icon that is basically responsible for the conversion of the inhabitant of Mexico to the Catholic faith.
So put the lyric in context and it is basically saying that he has been hearing the things done in the name of an icon that amount to little more than being a childs doll if you strip away the religious significance

Seriously Noel has been churning out stupid lyrics for the past 17 years, shakermaker, columbia, TAKE ME AWAY, hello etc the list goes on, did you really expect Shakespeare ressurection?

I love Noel's lyrics. He's got a real nack for writing, for want of a better word, almost 'childish' lyrics that some people may find 'cringeworthy' or 'embarassing' but they make so much sense at the same time and always put a good smile on your face. Noel isn't Shakespeare, and he knows it, but he knows how to write a line that makes you smile.
"I've got a piano, I can't find the C", "your music's shite, it keeps me up all night", "I'm feelin' supersonic, give me gin and tonic".
As for Little James, I have never understood the abuse that song gets. I think it's fantastic. Granted, the lyrics are simple and fairly childish, but Liam wrote it for his kid. The music is absolutely fantastic.
Too many people just follow Noel and slag the song off because he does. He knows himself that it's a great tune and only used to give Liam stick for it because it wound him up. Little James is superb. Great music, even if you don't like the lyrics.
It wouldn't have been on the album if Noel didn't like it.

I thought it was "the bitch keeps bitching and awwww..." which would be arguably worse.
But I don't care, because it sounds good in the song, which is a very overlooked aspect of lyrics in rock music.

It's more about how the words sound and flow than what he's actually saying in songs like this. Sometimes the lyrics just don't matter, and others they make the song that much better. |
