I like Cerys Matthews in Catatonia and Kirsty MacColl as well. Karen Carpenter and Eve Graham also nice. And Sonya Madan in Echobelly.
Edit: Dido has a nice voice as well, and Dusty Springfield had.

I've got to go with Aretha Franklin and Merry Clayton, if only for her work on Gimme Shelter.

I don't listen to that many female-fronted rock bands...I veer more toward jazz and things like that when it comes to girls.

Most female vocalist I enjoy are from older musicals: (in no particular order)
Shirley Jones Julia Andrews Elaine Paige Judy Garland (Goddess of voice, even if she was a drug addict!) Natalie Wood Bettie Hutton Rosemary Clooney Ethel Merman
There are more but those came to mind at the moment.

No-one's mentioned Amy Winehouse yet, and she deserves an approving nod at the very least.

Well, as mimmi knows, I'm a little bit in love with Laura Marling. Lol. Emma Pollock from The Delgados has a great voice too. The singer of Kensington Prairie has a gorgeous voice too, their track Golden Days is one of my fave tracks. The entire album, Captured in Still Life, is really great. kensingtonprairie.com/kensingtonprairie.bandcamp.com/track/golden-days
