as a teenager growing up in the 70's in belfast with the troubles going on there was nothing musically happening untill the clash came over and then every punk band started playing our bombed out city.
the musical tallent that was around in those days was truly enough to make up for the shit that i was living in at the time. music was electrifying.
then sadly the 80's arrived and brought with it preening peacocks who held their guitars like teddy bears while making that awful chic, chic, chic twitter with hairstyles that required at least three cans of hairspray to maintain even before they left home!!!!
by the end of that decade i was close to giving up on popular music. somone once said that music goes in seven year cycles. they lied.
there was guns and roses, the smiths and the stone roses debut album then came along in 89 but other than that nothing that really fired me up.
then one friday night i got home from a drunken night out and switched on channel 4's " THE WORD ". the last band on was this new band from the states. the singer dedicated the song to courtney love, the best fuck in the world and ripped in to "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT"

i was blown away. this was a yank band who understood punk rock! i played that tv show over and over and it just sounded better and better. on the day of release i was there to get that album.
to me, it was the opening salvo on a decade that rediscovered what great music could sound like once again. i always thought that " definitely maybe" was the british response to these snotty yanks who had raised the bar and thrown down the challenge with a "beat that britt's" attitude.
no surprise then that NEVERMIND and DEFINITELY MAYBE to me were the best (by far) albums in near fifteen years. mindblowing punk rock albums.
NEVERMIND is the album that finally broke punk rock to the american masses fifteen years after the event but i suppose better late than never.
and to me it is in my top five albums of all time. a masterpiece.n away. this was a yank band who understood punk rock! i played that tv show over and over and it just sounded better and better. on the day of release i was there to get that album.
