Okay, so I seem to have gotten involved in some sort of fight here. I normally wouldn't respond to insults and what have you, but I think that the flak I've been taking is undeserved. First of all, my posting of the quotes from those articles was not to show that they are a good band, but that they were INFLUENTIAL. Read the quotes about Coldplay and Rage. They don't say "U2 are the greatest band ever." They just talk about influence on other bands. Honestly, I justed posted them because eggymanos asked for examples of bands they have influenced. Second, I don't like U2 because Noel does. I've liked U2 before Oasis even existed. When I first heard Rattle and Hum, I was blown away and that was in 1988! And they are tons of musicians that Noel likes that I just can't get into, like Paul Weller for example (and I've never even heard of the Cheeky Girls). You guys don't like U2 and that's fine, I'm not trying to persuade you into liking them. I didn't think that anybody would read my post and go, "Oh, well you know what, after reading that, maybe I DO like U2." You can't MAKE anyone like anything. You could put a gun to my head and I still wouldn't like 99% of that shit that passes for music on the radio these days. I just posted those quotes to show that other very successful bands were influenced by them. So, no hard feelings I hope. Keep hating U2 and I'll keep liking them, no matter what Noel says. "If you could see what I could see Maybe we could all get along " fair enough mate, i didnt realise the point you were trying to make before, deleted my post.

lots of anger in this convo since im a devoted fan to both, thought i should give my 2 cents: Bono and Noel (and Liam too, from what i've read) have a big mutual respect thing going, hence why Oasis opened for U2 in 1997 for a show during the Popmart tour (around the time Oasis were pretty much the biggest band of the day in North America; they were playing stuff from Morning Glory and Be Here now about 3 times an hour here in TO, and im not over shooting it), and why Noel and Bono wrote 'One Step Closer', which is gonna be on the new U2 album (i wrote about this earlier today in another post). People need to understand the difference between respect and preference, if you don't like U2 thats fine, to say that they aren't inlfuential is just being ignorant, listen to the way 'Brit-rockers' play their guitar (as only 1 really small example of their influence, overlooking the impact of stadium rock and conceptual rock n roll), then listen to the bands of the post-punk movement to which U2 was born and tell me they dont play a role there (yes, you can keep going back all the way to when rock and roll was a black man playing his guitar on a porch talking about his girl done gone, thats the way rock n roll is). U2 is no doubt the biggest band in the world when they come out, always have been, always will be (in case no one has ever heard of Popmart, Zootv or the Elevation tours). Conceptually, lyrically, musically, beyond your own preference, they are an amazing band, even our boys Oasis admit it. So if they're gonna tour together, from my view, its fucking mega; here in T.O., Oasis sell out when they arive, and U2 is front page news; around Europe, both of these bands are tops. And in America....well, i never once said the american public understood music, atleast the popular culture public. If the rumours are correct, the tour is gonna be massive. Now im broke as hell, im a student who's paying off huge student debts, i have a dead end job that doesnt even pay $8/hr, i basically live in the fucking dole man! and when i hear about this tour, i think 'fuck it, money is made to be spent'; sit back, and fucking enjoy the 2 best bands of our time.

you clear your points of view very well mate, cheers for that. and about the anger in this conco, i think its more just a discussion, nothing more than that. Anyway: Youre right about the difference between respect and preference, BUT, then again you say:
that is, in no case, a fact. its your opinion. talkin about tours and all, then the stones would maybe be the biggest. Or even eminem (!). lyrically prolly the beatles or dylan or so. musically probably some individual artists.
this is an endless discussion i think...

Noel also said in an interview somewhere that he didn't try to make politic songs because politicians would do whatever they like anyway. That no musician never changed anything. A secret message to Bono?
Let's face it. U2 have a shitload of albums in their backcatalogue, but only a handfull of good songs. And what's with all the scene shows anyway, do they need to dress it up to something it's not? Can the music not stand alone, i never liked the big scene shows anyway, that'll be U2, the stones or whoever.
I hope Oasis won't tour with U2. From a financial point of view it would probably be worth it, and for U2 it would give them a lot more publicity in some circles they might not be as big in, but apart from money there's nothing in it for Oasis. The U2 audience would most likely despice Oasis for their attitude and not give them a fair chance. And Oasis not touring England with them anyway then why bother?
