It's been an absolute privilege.

Fantastic player, superb passer and scored some screamers. Couldn't tackle to save his life but among the best midfielders in Premiership history along with Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard.

Fantastic player, superb passer and scored some screamers. Couldn't tackle to save his life but among the best midfielders in Premiership history along with Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard. Among? He is the best. I doubt even the players you've noted would argue otherwise. Nor would Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas, Edgar Davids, or Zinedine Zidane. Football often divides opinion, but I've never known a player to command such absolute respect and admiration from his peers, or from football fans alike. He is a special, special footballer, and I will dearly miss seeing him on that pitch.

The players I mentioned are all as good if not better than Scholes in certain parts of their game as Scholes was a better passer than any of the players mentioned. He was a great player with amazing vision and a superb footballing brain but he couldn't turn a game around like Gerrard so often did. He was nowhere near as good as Keane at breaking down play. I'll give you Vieira, he was better than him.
So, as you said, divided opinions.

Never heard anyone refer to Scholes as God until now. Then you mustn't know many United fans.

To be fair I don't, there isn't many MUD fans in my area. Well, not many passionate fans. Most of them jumped on the bandwagon in the 90's. It's mostly Liverpool and Celtic fans here.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/13600395.stmScholes was held in high esteem by his fellow professionals - in 2009, former world player of the year Zinedine Zidane said he was "the complete midfielder" and "my toughest opponent". The France international added: "Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest of his generation."That same year, United legend Sir Bobby Charlton also had warm words to say about the one-club man. He commented: "Many great players have worn the shirt of Manchester United - players I worshipped, then lost with my youth in Munich. Players like Denis Law and George Best, who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Ferguson era - and in so many ways Scholes is my favourite."

Well and truly a great player, a shame he didn't have a proper send off in a competitive match. I detest 99% of that United squad but like supersonic said, I will miss seeing him on the pitch. Youngsters should take note - that is how you play football.
It's just a shame it wasn't that massive twat Ryan Giggs retiring.

I'd take the little Spanish magician, Cesc, over Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard any day.

I'd take the little Spanish magician, Cesc, over Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard any day. "He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League." - Cesc Fabregas Scholes deserves better than comparisons with those three.
