Anyone heard it yet? I got it today and I'm not quite sure what to think of it - some really catchy rock tunes, but a lot of the songs seem a bit flat at first listen. Guess I have to give it a few more listens before I really get the album...it's always like that with REM

The full record was streamed on an NPR 'listening party' on Tuesday. Like all of the past REM 5 or 6 CDs half of it is really good and half of it sounds like it was written on REM auto- pilot.
On first listens, I like it but it ends weakly. I don't care for Me and Marlon Brando and I found 'Blue' unlistenable, it's E-Bow The Letter - even down to Patti Smith's cameo and Stipes mumbled un-melodic speech - without any discernable tune. 'Everyday is yours to win' would have worked better as a sign-off, and has a super vocal melody and performance.
Discoverer was released as a free download 2 months or so and I have played it very regularly since first hearing, it gets better and better for me, Oh My Heart is a nice companion piece/hopeful sequel to Accelerate's Houston, Uberlin starts off like 'Drive' but gets a lot better, and Alligator.., and Mine Smell are satisfying crunchy, catchy alt. rock tracks to make up the numbers.
6/10 .. but just on first listens.

Of the 3 songs that leaked I only liked Uberlin, but I will listen the album to have a better view.

I've been listening to the whole thing for a week now and it is really a great album - I don't get Blue at all, but each of the other 11 songs is a hit. Definitely one of the best albums from the last few years. 2011 is a great year for music so far.

My exact thoughts,i think there's maybe a deep meaning to ''blue'' could be wrong though, more about the words than tune,it's a very instant album, like we've known the tunes for years. It's my fave album this year apart from B.E.

haven't heard the album, except for the previously released single tracks. i've heard it's their best album in years, so i'll definitely give it a listen soon. (some of their recent albums have been utter shit, though, so we'll see.)

(some of their recent albums have been utter shit, though, so we'll see.) Which one? I can't recall a really bad R.E.M. album. Just like with Oasis, even the worse REM albums are better than average.

I like the new REM album. Better than Accelerate (even though that had some good rockers on there, and Until The Day Is Done is terrific). Definitely better than ATH and Up (two of my least favorites of theirs) and equal to Reveal, which I think is their "underrated gem" album IMO.

The last five album go like this: 1 and 2 are reveal and Up, 3 and 4 are accelerate and collapse into now, and the worst is by far around the sun, not even close, it's over produced,

The last 4 R.E.M. albums have been great .. around the sun is a more laid back album, which is why they recorded accelerate, this album reminds me of out of time with guest appearances etc.Reveal is a classic & underrated imo.

I kinda expected that many here don't like Around The Sun. I think it's great - of course it lacks the rockers and fast tunes other REM albums have (especially Accelerate, which I love), but the slower, melodic songs are better than one thinks at first listen. It's not easy to get into ATS, but I wouldn't say it's worse than Accelerate or CIN.

^ I agree,i wanted to be wrong, around the sun, ascent of man & make it all okay are class tunes & leaving new york. Another agreement here, I have always loved The Ascent of Man. Around the sun is very underrated, it's very mid-paced and filling the disc with 13 tracks is ridiculous - it was bound to have its share of average forgettable material, but hidden away are fantastic tunes which have some of the most beautiful melodies of the band's entire career.

^ I like the whole album i'd say the worst on it was the outsiders.Chart music is bollocks now,I think collapse into now deserved to be number 1 & different gear, both albums done great considering everyone seems to think hip hop is good.
R.E.M. have been out just over 30 years if Adele is still going i doubt she'll even enter the top 20.

Haven't yet got the album but I look forward to it - I've heard a few of the songs and I really like it. I'm a massive fan of early REM in particular - it's been hit and miss with albums after Automatic For The People though. Looks as if this is shaping up to be a hit though.

Collapse Into Now can't be a miss for anybody who likes REM, really. Most of the songs resemble some of their earlier hits, the sound is exactly what you'd expect. Still, the tunes are there, the production is great, and for their 15th album, they still have a remarkable enery and spirit. I'm loving this album more with every time I listen to it
