After Noel Gallagher finally quit Oasis in August 2009, who’d have guessed that the rest of the band would side with his younger brother? Liam, after all, was the liability, the loose cannon, whose chief contribution was an edginess which constantly destabilised the ship. Noel, the songwriter, who made the whole world sing (in the early days, at least), surely would have been the more reliable meal ticket. From day one, however, Noel ran Oasis on a “captain and crew” basis, keeping his charges on a tight, Beatles-embossed leash. At crunch time, the hirelings whom Noel himself had gradually cherry-picked from British indie-rock’s upper echelons to replace the original line‑up, doubtless shared the unreliable Gallagher’s thirst for liberty and stuck by him instead. So it was that Beady Eye formed, and ever since this debut has been awaited with a rare mixture of car-crash voyeurism and cautious optimism. Wouldn’t Liam make a twit of himself, without big brother’s guidance? But then, wasn’t it really him, the beautiful nutcase, who always set Oasis’s vital energy a‑crackling?
The good news is that, from its amusingly headlong title down, Different Gear, Still Speeding feels a good deal less lumpy than the last few Oasis albums. The teaser track, Bring the Light, is everything one might have hoped for from Beady Eye – a piano-pounding rush of vintage rock & roll, which sets the listener’s fevered brain fizzing with thoughts of Little Richard and the Velvet Underground, rather than the same old Beatles references. In interviews, Liam, Gem Archer (guitarist; ex-Heavy Stereo), Andy Bell (guitarist/bassist; ex-Ride) and Chris Sharrock (drummer, ex-La’s) have talked excitedly about the joys of collaborative writing, and there is an all-pervasive vibe of freshness, upbeat melody and commitment. Gallagher, throughout, sings like a man possessed. Aside from another full-blooded, filth-and-fury rocker, Standing on the Edge of the Noise, the highlights are Millionaire and For Anyone, each recalling the breezy, skiffly Merseybeat of Sharrock’s erstwhile accomplices, the La’s. These stand out, for the simple reason that there was seldom room for prettiness within the Oasis brand. Elsewhere, though, it is, disappointingly, business as usual – particularly on Four Letter Word, the trundling opener, which was presumably put there so as not to frighten the horses and Oasis’s staunch fan base. It doesn’t take long for Beatles nods to pile up: The Roller so resembles John Lennon’s Instant Karma, one can almost picture Liam with long hair and little round specs singing it. There’s even a song called Beatles and Stones, although, with merciful perversity, it rips off the Who’s My Generation. Fans will trawl the lyrics for veiled messages to Noel – “Life’s too short not to forgive/ I’m here if you wanna call”, from Kill For a Dream, should set the message boards chattering – but there is enough here to suggest that Beady Eye might take on a life of its own, especially with live gigs lined-up this month. For now, though, the nagging feeling is that Different Gear isn’t quite different enough. Beady Eye: Different Gear, Still Speeding is out 1 March
Download this Bring the Light They gave it 3 stars. www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/cdreviews/8343003/Beady-Eye-Different-Gear-Still-Speeding-CD-review.htmlMore or less the same as the other reviews. Surprisingly this album hasn't really go any (credible) bad review =) The only thing that bothers me, is that there are so many (not necessarily bad) reviews who just "forget" to mention The Morning Son, TBGO, and Wigwam. Are those going to be fans favorites?

It gives credence to the theory that there is something for everyone on this album.
This review obviously wasn't that big an Oasis fan, as he calls business as usual disappointing and that its not quite different enough but found enough to like to give it 3 stars and praise the band.

These reviews are proving one thing! Make up your own mind! I have never seen so many different opinions. One has Millionaire as a 'miss' as others say it's great. This review says to download one particular song............... 'Bring The Light'!!??
I rate the album as a 7-7.5/10.
Good enough for me!

Yeah indeed. Almost each review has its different favorite songs. I've heard people quoting FLW, Millionaire, TR, BTL, FA, KFAD, even SOTEOTN, W, TRC, TBGO and TMS as "best ones of the album". Also, almost all the reviews have the same conclusion. Nothing grounbreaking, not as good as DM, but an excellent debut, much better than everyone expected!! =)

im on the same board with you, the album is a solid 8/10 for me. it's not an all time great but it is one of the best i've heard as of late and imo it should be a contender for (rocK)album of the year.

Really?!? Got a whole year left buddy. If this ends up as a rock album of the year, then its been a slow music year. imo the record is average to slightly above average. This isn't all time great, you said it yourself. And as you said, its only the best you've heard recently. Emphasis should be put on recently. The begining of the year is the slow part of the music year. This record will not even be in the discussion for rock album of the year, unless its some one like NME who nominates it or something.

I think the album is rather good, not great but rock solid . im not saying that throughout the year there wont be a band that releases a killer single(something DGSS perhaps doesn't have), i see that happening every year. But that doesn't mean that band's album is automatically a great album. For instance do you know who won the grammy THE GRAMMY, for best rock album in 2010? It was Green Day with 21st Century Breakdown, that album sucked for the most pat. it had 1 very good song and another ok song. that equals best rock album ? nope but it won anyway. how about this year's winner... The Resistance by Muse, that shit stank so bad is not even funny. why do they win? because they have singles and they promote the shit out of their records. So if you're referring to that kind of music, then yes, it's still early but i don't consider that crap "good".

I've got a feeling it will be the best rock album of the decade. Gonna be a shit decade so. There's an album coming out in April that will most likely be much better.

So if you're referring to that kind of music, then yes, it's still early but i don't consider that crap "good". Okay...but BDI does not get as much press love as fuckin Green Day. Bad example. What actual promotions of singles have you seen from BDI so far? For them to get nominated for any major award show they;ve gotta make a dent here in the states. Those bands that you mentioned, have made a dent. BDI can barely do good promotion of their singles in the UK. And its really hard for bands from the UK to get nominations, much less win. Muse had a #1 hit on the rock atl. charts here in the states. I don't think BDI will even come close to getting that. Grammys are shit anyways. Wonderwall not winning proves that. The only way a band gets nominated at the Grammys is if it has made a dent stateside, which BDI probably won't do. BDI is not getting nominated for a Grammy. They'll be lucky if they get nominated for a BRIT (prob for the best new comer). And I'll say it again, if BDI's record is one of the Top 5 rock albums of the year (whether nominated for an award or not), then it's been a really really really slow year. There's a lot better music out there if you just look.

It stupid to even attempt to try and compare it directly with DM.
As far as first albums go for any band, this is a great, great album. There is not a filler on this album. Sometimes, I think British fans are spoiled because they are not stuck with half of the crap, we are exposed to in the States
The notion this would need to be creative, or attempt to be creative is a joke. Radiohead is creative and let's be honest, some of their music is fucking terrible.
