Well....... I managed to pick up the Lennon boxset released for his 70th Bday and the Double Fantasy, stripped down as its called. I also had the Lennon Anthology released i dont know how many years ago..
Listening to songs post Imagine.... example Walls And Bridges, say perhaps Nobody Loves (when your down and out) and comparing to the Anthology demo; I consider the final album production ruined the songs .. with horns and unnecesarry effects. In Double Fantasy which i always considered a great album but way over produced,,, contrasting with the stripped down version,,, this last one has become a much more enjoyable record to listen. ( I dont mind that the analogue tape hiss its present on the stripped down version)..
I dont know if this is just me and going crazy and being way to much beatle - lennon maniac... but i think most of his demos and less polished production sounded wayyyy better that the final cuts.
Examples:
Nobody Loves you ( when your down and out) as mentioned. Clean up time from Double Fantasy Bring on the Lucie (Freda People) from mind games
And the list goes on....

Yeah...i know the one your talking bout... they where called after Lennon-related places-situations Ascot, New York City, Lost Weekend, Dakota, that Dakota one was the best one along with the Ascot one obviously, which is exactly proving my point, for me the production ruined (well not entirely ruined but you know what i mean) Mind Games, Walls and Bridges (funnily enough Lennons first number 1 single is the most annoying track on the album in my opinion) and Double Fantasy for me. Lots of people think Double Fantasy stripped down is another strategy from Yoko to live from the Lennon legacy,,, but I really found it reallly really enjoyable to listen to and worthy of picking up. In the other hand the problem of Yoko singing on have of the tracks persists ,,, dont get me wrong I respect Yoko as an artist-idealist or whatever,, and I know Yoko influenced John work sometimes in the good way,,, but the problem is that the woman can't sing-write music.

You may want to check out the Menlove Avenue LP. I think it's out of print but you can still find it it. Might be what you are looking for. Info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menlove_Ave.
