Not a classic yet in my book but definitely a very good song. I'd like to hear it live.

It's a decent song at best.
...but there's no real hook, nothing that gets you up out your seat singing with your arms around your mates at 3am in some crappy club, not even a proper solo to wanna make me do the air guitar.
So by that definition, it can't be a real classic.

^ I don't agree with the definition as it is, but playing along for a moment, how can that guitar break in The Roller not excite you? It's perfectly tasteful.

Derivative in an awful way... Just a blatant rip off of Gem's 5 influences and boring to boot. Do any of you remember the thrill of hearing songs like Supersonic, Cast No Shadow or D'You Know What I Mean? Certainly influenced by past artists but also totally original and thrilling. The Roller is just so derivative and has zero inspiration behind it. So obvious why it sat unused for 8 years when Noel had say. I am excited to hear some of the tunes from the samples but so far the b-sides have been the only good tunes and one of them's a cover.

I have a more positive opinion of The Roller but I generally agree with what you said. It gets really better toward the end but I think they should've chosen another song as the lead single. It's just not enough to grab attention and there are better tunes, according to the reviews. But I was never favorable toward Oasis's lead single selection anyway.

Nothing that BDI released/will release is/gonna be a classic, because of the inevitable and constant comparison to Oasis. But like someone said, it doesn't mean it can't be a personal favourite.

Lads just look to The Masterplan album , how they were b-sides i will never know ! says it all regarding the selection of songs be it for a single or an album. Who cares about whats the lead single anyway, Beady Eye will grab the attention of people simply for the fact that Liam Gallagher is in the band so people will listen to them .

You really think the average punter will be sitting around a table with his cohorts, analyzing how much The Roller sounds like IK? I don't think so. It's only the die hard fans who tend to give the band a hard time, and that's fine. But who really cares if it's derivative or not? As long as you like how it sounds is all the matters. Remember, Oasis "Weren't about re-inventing the wheel, they never wanted to re-invent the wheel", additionally people dont want to get the "log rhythms out" when listening to music. You would have a point if BDI were about being experimental and different. While I, too, would like them to be a more innovative, I think it's a bit harsh to criticize The Roller for the reasons people have done.

The song hasn't gotten enough airplay to be declared a classic because so many casual music fans love it. Bu the DJ's and music press and music fans all know it's too similar to an already classic song to be considered a classic song in it's own right. If they had taken inspiration from a mediocre song and made it great the. Maybe it would have been considered a classic. But taking the makings of a brilliant song and mixing it up a bit to create a really good song isn't how you make a classic tune.

I liked what someone said earlier, about it being a classic in the Oasis/Beady Eye world. Of course it will never be a worldwide hit like Wonderwall or anything like that. We've already seen that it's hit or miss for most people, but I think in a few years time, when people think of Beady Eye, they will think of the Roller. Unless something else from the album completely blows me away, the Roller will be their most widely known song from their first album.
I hope they have another song that will be a good single, but we'll see.

In truth, we're going to be comparing everything to Oasis - which is tough enough but we've got nostalgic sentiments which will make it even tougher. Don't think anyone on here will say a tune is as good as Slide Away or Live Forever even if it may truly well be (although, I don't think BDI are capable of THAT kind of quality myself, but that's neither here nor there).
Basically, we're blinded by what we idolize....

Basically, we're blinded by what we idolize.... ^ I've not compared it in my mind to any Oasis tune...and it's still not a classic to me. It's a really good tune...but it's not classic. And if it can't hold it's own against the big songs of Oasis...why should it ever be considered a classic amongst the classics releases through the ages by the likes of The Who, Pink Floyd, Zepplin, The Beatles, The Stone, etc.

^ Well, I'm of the belief that it doesn't really matter what the public has decided is a classic. I like the Roller better than any Pink Floyd song by a lot (I just don't like them at all). So the whole idea of dubbing certain things "classics" is a strange practice. I think that Big Star released 3 classic albums in the '70s, but most people don't know who Big Star were. A lot of people love the Doors, and that's great. That doesn't mean I care for their songs.
I guess what I'm saying is a debate over what's "classic" is very directionless and 100% subjective. All music discussion is, but a topic like this can only really prompt "yes" or "no" answers, rather than a more open-ended, opportunity-filled question.

^ I get what you mean. But we are prime demographic to call a BDI tune a classic...all being fans of the 4 men in BDI and the type of music that they play.
I wouldn't expect that everyone in the world would put there neck out for it...but we aren't the world...we are Oasis fans. The Roller is right up our alley musically and stylistically.
If TBGO is as great as the reviews say...I'll say it's classic in my books. Slide Away be damned. I just find the assertion that the only reason that most don't think TR is classic is because we hold Oasis is too high esteem. If it can't stand up next to your favorite tunes (I don't care if your favorite tunes include tunes by Big Star, or Oasis, or Pink Floyd, or The Beatles) then it isn't classic. There is no prevaricating.
I just don't believe NL4E statement about us being blind to the quality of this tune because we idolise Oasis too much. What bollocks.

I also don't mean that TR can't be a classic to someone else, despite my opinion to the contrary. I just think that says that the reason that WE (as a board) don't collectively agree with that opinion is not because we are blinded by Oasis.
And I think that the reason that Oasis classics are brought up so much has something to do with your point. They are the only band's tunes that we would probably all agree are classics.

It's a poor, boring, uninspired, meaningless Instant Karma knock-off.
