I had a discussion about them in another thread, so I thought I'd ask what you think of them. IMO, comparing them to Oasis is stupid, as their music is of a totally different genre (except for a few songs). They have a few really good tunes (Beetlebum is on par with most Oasis songs, Song 2 is good too), but others are just boring (e.g. Girls&Boys, which is a average pop song IMO). Is it really such a crime to call them a bad band, or at least a worse band than Oasis? Also, if there are any Blur songs that come close to Oasis' stuff, please tell me. Don't wanna insult a band I don't know too well.

To me, this video sums it all up. It's not their greatest song, but the atmosphere is amazing!

Good band.
Tender Beetlebum Song 2 The Universal Charmless Man For Tomorrow Tracy Jacks End Of A Century
They're my favourites and even Noel acknowledges that Blur were better than a lot of the shite coming out today.

Blur are a very different band from Oasis, they have more similarities with Pulp or Suede than with the Gallaghers in their pop era ( the britpop trilogy, from Modern life is rubbish to The Great Escape ) and then they turned into an alternative rock band with influences of american indie rock bands. I think they are remembered as a better band because they changed their style many times, while Oasis stayed basically the same over the years ( I don't know why, though, when Noel tried different things they were usually great ). Anyway, the comparison and rivalry between both bands is stupid and it's been over for more than 10 years. If you wanna give them a try, my favourite albums are Modern life is rubbish, 13 and Think Tank.

Fantastic band - I don't think there's a general consensus that Blur are better because its down to a matter of opinion. Blur were more consistent, more innovative with every album release and such, although I don't think their high points and best albums compare to Oasis' best albums. I do agree with the original poster that Girls & Boys is pretty shit along with their other odd poppy tune like The Great Escape's Country House, but apart from this minor occurrence, it doesn't take anything away from their more accomplished work on such albums like Parklife.
I also like the influences of the bands they have taken from, and like Oasis it's based on the classic British bands of previous decades who most of them I love anyway. I'm not keen though on the influences they took for their self titled album 'Blur' - i.e. grunge was an influence. I think that took away a lot of the charm and wit that was ever present on their previous albums. That said, 13 was very different also but I loved that one because the influences were more to my taste and ,for example, the gospel touch on Tender seemed to work very well with them. Also, maybe to understand them better, their Britpop work is heavily anglo-centric, music wise and lyrically.
Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife and 13 are all great great albums personally. The only albums I'm not keen on is their first one and Blur.
The reason I prefer Oasis though is that their tunes were euphoric and optimistic, while their heartfelt poignant moments were equally amazing also. If it was Blur vs early Oasis - Oasis would win hands down without a doubt. If it were Blur versus late Oasis, then Blur would win most definitely.
But hey, I'm not complaining, two truly great bands from one era is pretty special.

It took me a while get into them, but I really like Modern Life Is Rubbish and Parklife. After those two albums, they still made some amazing tunes, but those two albums are absoute classics.

This surprises me. I was sure you'd prefer the last 3 albums actually. For me it's the self titled. The early albums sound like they just want to sell as many records as possible (and Damon initially cam across that way IMO) while the later albums sound like they just want to be Radiohead. The self titled is them trying to shy away from Britpop and there's some nice guitar work. Song 2 is still a steaming pile of shite though and I've always wondered if it was actually a piss take on oasis...

The three Britpop era albums are great! Modern Life Is Rubbish was pretty much the first real Britpop album and it starts off with For Tomorrow, one of their best tunes. Pop perfection. And a nice semi-patriotic video.
My favourite is The Great Escape, though. It is far from being as good as WTSMG, but still one of the highlights of Britpop. All those three albums are quite consistent, but there are more highlights on The Great Escape. And also the end of the album, as well as the "filler" is a bit more intriguing than the counterparts on Modern Life and Parklife.
Also their epinymous album is good, although I prefer their 93-95 style.
Blur tunes to check out if you're new to them: For Tomorrow (MLIR) Chemical World (MLIR) Star Shaped (MLIR) End Of A Century (PL) Badhead (PL) To The End (PL) Stereotypes (TGE) Best Days (TGE) The Universal (TGE) It Could Be You (TGE) Yuko & Hiro (TGE) You're So Great (Blur) Look Inside America (Blur) Strange News From Another Star (Blur) Coffee & TV (13)

It surprised me too! ;D Their first few albums just seem so much more sincere; just like fuck all else, we're fucking British and we're going to make uniquely British music. I can't imagine an American band writing a tune like Parklife, even in purely musical terms (lyrically obviously has even less of a chance). I do enjoy their latter albums and there is a wealth of creativity in them, but Parklife and Modern Life Is Rubbish are pure and absolutely brilliant British pop. I love that stuff and it fits in with the times (or at least my wild, dream-like view of the 90s in Britain) perfectly. Bands like Oasis, Pulp, Blur, Suede, and Supergrass (and obviously much more!) making loads of incredible pop tunes. What a time to be alive! Though, just for the record, I don't like Girls and Boys and a LOATHE Song 2. I agree, what a piece of shit tune, I can't believe it's their biggest song. What a fucking shame.

Song 2 is just a joke song for making fun of America's mainstream rock at the moment, it's not meant to be serious. Girls & Boys is a bit dull in Parklife, but played live is amazing :

Blur is good, lots of nice music, Leisure and TGS are shit, MLIR and Parklife are great, Blur and 13 are good but too inconsistent and pretentious in some ways, TT is average IMO.
The problem with them is that their discography is very inconsistent, even their best album Parklife has some fillers on it, and there are some annoyances like too much na na na and la la la over the songs. On later carrer their started to make more serious music, but the funny thing is that no one took them serious.
Oasis is on another level, their anthems, live performances, hystorical gigs, b-sides, charismatic members, cultural impact and albums are more memorable. Blur could never touch that.
Blur also should be thankfull to Oasis, many people started to hear blur because of the Gallaghers and their feud.

Blur are great. They aren't like one of my favorite bands ever but they have some great tunes scattered through out their career and they managed to make some great albums as well. The Great Escape, Modern Life is Rubbish, and Parklife are great Britpop records. Leisure has She's So High, Sing, and There's No Other Way which are pretty great slices of pop music. About 2/3 of Think Tank is great and it actually contains some of my favorite blur songs (Sweet Song, Ambulance, Out Of Time, Good Song). 13 is a great album filled with so many styles of music ranging from, electronica to punk. its a bit disjointed but its still a pretty solid record and No Distance Left To Run is just a stone cold heartbreaker. For their self titled album i really have to be in the mood but its still a decent record non the less. They are a good band who made consistent (in terms of quality )albums after album but changed during each album. Thing is though non of their albums really grabbed me and screamed classic. Just a great band which is something to be proud of though.
