four letter word is blatently about noel. wonder if he'll write a song in response... reminds me of when the Beatles broke up and Paul did his song and Lennon responded with How do you sleep..

^ Paul never said it was. John was the one that took offense to it. For such an occasionally volatile man, he had very thin skin. Too Many People has the line about "too many people preaching practices" which is definitely about John and Paul has admitted it.

Yes, John thought he could hear "sly little digs" aimed at himself&Yoko in many of the tracks. As johnnycl wrote, Paul has admitted that "too many people preaching practices" is actually about John&Yoko, while casually adding:-) that also the lines
"that was your first mistake/ you took your lucky break and broke it in two/ now what can be done for you/ you broke it in two"
are aimed at John.
"Dear Boy", which John seemingly also saw as an attack on himself, is actually about Linda's first husband and how he didn't value Linda high enough. I've never understood how John could see that song as directed at himself, but then John probably wasn't the most logical person...
In "3 legs" the lines that alerted John were apparently
"Well, when I thought, well, I thought, When I thought you was my friend. When I thought, well, i thought, When I thought you was my friend. But you let me down, ho, Put my heart around the bend. ... Most flies they got three legs But mine got one. ... Well, when I fly, when I fly, when I fly, When I fly above the clouds. You can knock me down, with a feather, yes, you could, But you know it's not allowed. My dog he got three legs, your dog he got none, uh, uh, uh, My dog he got three legs, your dog he got none, My dog he got three legs, your dog he got none."
The first part of the song you can understand John took as written for him; yet it is not nasty or angry, more sad and wistful. The flies and dogs with one or three legs John apparently saw as some sort of nasty codes aimed at himself and Yoko.
To get back to Oasis, it may be true that we entered the Ram/Imagine period. However, I don't hear "FLW" as a nasty song at all, but a sad and wistful and even loving one. If Noel gets offended and comes up with some kind of "How Do You Sleep" stuff I'll be really disappointed at him. "HDYS" is, in addition to being really cruel, throughly immature, sniggering & self-absorbed - all things that I hope Noel will not turn out to be in his solo recording(s).

Let's hope not; I always thought John's attacks on Paul were childish at best. Call me crazy, but I always preferred Paul's solo work anyway.

I too hope we are not entering any "war" period. The break-up was painful enough.
I also think that in the Lennon/McCartney dispute McCartney comes up as the moral winner. Recently even Yoko admitted that Paul had played a vital part in getting John&Yoko together after "the lost weekend" - and that happened only three years after John had written "those freaks were right when they said you was dead" about Paul.
And you can call me crazy too, since I too prefer Paul's solo work. I love "Plastic Ono Band" and some parts of "Mind Games" and "Walls&Bridges", but "Imagine" and "Double Fantasy" I just don't get at all. Actually, in "Double Fantasy", Yoko's songs are more interesting that John's.

Count me as the third in the thread preferring Paul's solo work. John did some great stuff, but Paul was constantly dogged by critics no matter what he did. John did a lot of mediocre stuff in his solo career. A whole lot. But no one ever really talks about that.

I agree that FLW is probably directed @ Noel. Pretty well done though. Isn't too angry or bitter.
Hope it won't become a regular thing thing.

I havent really got that into pauls solo stuff. but i just think that the songs " God, Jealous Guy, Imagine.. these are all beatle level songs. and paul had very few. live and let die, band on the run maybe im amazed... but i feel lennon overall had more top shelf songs. to each their own. but just how i see it. which albums of pauls is your fave? i am open to trying more of his solo work

I also prefer McCartney's solo work. Looking at the greatest Beatles albums you can also see that McCartney wrote the majority of the tracks. He kept that momentum going into his solo career.
Anyway I expect Noel to not respond to this. Liam is always gonna be the immature little brother and Noel will be the one to shrug it off.

But I also think Noel knows it'll wind Liam up more to be ignored than to be insulted. So it'll serve the double purpose of show him to be above petty insults...and annoy Liam. Brilliant really.

[which albums of pauls is your fave? i am open to trying more of his solo work I'm not Johnnyc1, but would suggest the two most recent ones, "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" (2005) and "Memory Almost Full" (2007). Both are great. "Band on the Run" (1973) is of course the canon one.

Driving Rain, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, Memory Almost Full...all great albums. Band On The Run is obviously the classic album, as was previously mentioned. Ram is devilishly underrated. So many great songs on that one. But I do agree that John's solo career was more song-based than album-based. Imagine is a good listen the whole way through, as is Plastic Ono Band, but after that it gets dicey.
