Can anyone tell me a bit more about this tune, like what album session it came from? How Noel described it? I know Gem wrote it and its got a camp-fire feel with a lennon-esque piano hook, but is there anything else? Thanks

Originated from HC and is now a Lennon-esque piano hook song with a Beatles melody. You pretty much nailed as much as we know.
If I was to offer my opinion, then I would say it will sound very DBTT era and maybe a mix of Love Like A Bomb and Let There Be Love obviously with some sort of Lennon vocal on the top.
So I'm expecting an acoustic guitar with a nice summery piano and then a groovy drum beat and a few melodies that drop in and out on the lead guitar.

From Mr Monobrow's site: The Roller In an interview for the December 2000 edition of Select Magazine, Noel made the following brief quote about this song. "Gem's written his first song for the band, called 'The Roller' - it's like T Rex doing `Instant Karma'". On the 27th June 2002, in an interview for BBC Radio London, Noel mentioned the song whilst talking about Gem. "He wrote two [songs for Heathen Chemistry], one was called 'The Roller' which we didn't, for whatever reason, didn't quite nail in the studio, that'll probably end up on a b-side somewhere.", Listen to Noel here. This confirms that 'The Roller' is in fact a completely separate song to 'Hung In A Bad Place' and not a working title, as was commonly thought. source: www.mrmonobrow.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/unheard/94topresent.html

I'm quite intriuged about this song to be honest. It's been around for ten years, and now we finally get to hear it. Luckily for Gem, The Roller isn't as overhyped as was with the case of Record Machine and of course Stop The Clocks. Roll on January, can't wait to hear it

Sometimes I Think Noel just made up those descriptions on the spot even if he hadn't heard the song. T Rex doing instant karma conjures up electric guitars and glam rock swagger, another reason why ppl probably thought it was hiabp.
I remember pre dbtt he said love like a bomb sounded like the who!

Maybe they revisited it and changed it to a mellow vibe type tune. I mean didn't we hear in the last few weeks that its got a camp fire feel? Its gotta be mellow then?

The campfire comment is old. could've changed since. We don't even know what Gem meant by campfire; maybe he just meant its a sing-a-long song like All You Need Is Love and wasn't refering to the production?

Before DBTT was released I saw this on some Oasis blog.
The Roller
First non-Gallagher track of the album, completely contrasting is the distorted vocals and exhilarating guitar solo with the rest of the album. One of Gem’s best Oasis tracks so far. It comes across as more like half-finished jams rather than a song, but despite of that it’s just and amazing tune.

I dont think anyone has actually heard the song. we cant assume it will have the sound of the HC or DBTT era, because this is Beady Eye who have already shown that their sound is slightly different to Oasis

I was really hoping for a bit of a rockier track rather than a piano-y / acoustic-y type number.

I was really hoping for a bit of a rockier track rather than a piano-y / acoustic-y type number. Who said it's acoustic ?? seems like some people are reading "mis-quotes" from old interviews and then applying them to now. NME only mentioned the Piano - which I suppose normally you would put with it being an acoustic song - it's kinda giving me the impression it may be like something Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would do? ?

We can't go off any old interview. Chances are that changes have been made, and that there's different version knocking around - it's been 8 years, after all!

Who said it's acoustic ?? from some of the comments above in this post for example "camp-fire feel" "Lennon-esque piano hook song with a Beatles melody" "So I'm expecting an acoustic guitar with a nice summery piano" I was just replying to some of the earlier posts that seem to have a bit more knowledge of the song from it's inception than I do. I was just stating my opinion that I hope it's a rocky number - Just seen the nme preview of four letter word - that's the kind of thing I was expecting from Beady Eye.

I wonder if The Roller could actually be that 'Show Me Your Love' song everyone's always banging on about. Seems to fit the description and, if Gem wrote it on piano he could have showed Liam the guitar parts justathoughtinniz
