...as i'm a student at BIMM, he came in did a talk having played Brighton Centre last night. Said some interesting stuff during the talk, then after, crossed the road and asked where the nearest newsagents for some "ciggies" was, i told him on the main road but he wanted one on the sea front, which was on my way home so we were talking.
Anyway....he likes BDI, said he'd only heard the a side and that it was a nice "slice of rock n roll". he said his relationship with L & N hasnt changed a bit but that they are both much happier in themselves.
I sensed he doesn't rate Noel as much as vice versa. When asked who was his top 5 song writers ever he actually listed about 9/10, none included Noel but did include "carl and pete" from The Libertines. He also said he gets nervous for every gig but that gives his gigs an "edge". he then said "i have mates in bands who don't get nervous at all and i think that lack of edge is noticeable in their performance, its' detrimental to the show". He must mean Noel here surely?
i asked him how easy it was to do a co write for Echoes... with Noel. He said he could never be in studio sat down trying to write songs with him, it was demo's Noel couldn't do anything with so Weller and his producer took them and developed lyrics and a melody to.
there was loads more, but that was the main Oasis based stuff, thought you lot might be interested.
P.S. Weller's face looks fucking ancient up close.

Cheers
But doubt he was refering to Noel regarding a lack of nerves - Noel has always dealed with them by jumping up and down when about to walk on stage - almost Boxer style.

Carl and pete are ok, but not the 'modern day poets' everyone goes on about. Ray davies, now there's a songwriter and a half

I'm not surprised he didn't put Noel in his top ten simply because he's mates - his own opinion. Weller's his own man, comes across as very opinionated and isn't going to be swayed for sentimental reasons which is actually good to see.

But the Noel also didn't include the Jam in his top 10 bands of all time. I wouldn't take that to mean that he doesn't rate them highly.
I think they probably quite like each others music...but that doesn't mean that either of them would have the other @ the very top of their lists of favorite artists.
But it might be that Noel might rate Weller more than vice versa but who knows. He obviously likes him a lot...what does it matter where he rates him on a league-table of musicians.

Pretty cool 'namedropping' thread-title, Simmo!
Can anyone top this Weller entry, with the likes of;
'My afternoon spent knocking back pints of Guinness with a frank and reflective Noel [and I was priveliged to pay?']

Cannot stand Barat. Think he is talentless. Doherty is a knob but there is no denying he has some talent.

This, same with Alex Turner. They aren't in the same league as Noel but if Weller thinks differently that's his choice.

Maybe the reason he lists Doherty, Barat n Turner, is because they were in bands that were about the only exciting thing to have happened to Rock music over the past 10 years. I know alot of you will probably moan like fuck at me saying that but its true, even though these kids aren't the best players n singers n that, they still gave us a whole new wave of Rock, the 'Indie' scene.
N after all Weller (as much as he is mod n well into the classic soul n rnb) was definitely inspired by the punk attitudes of the Sex Pistols, hence the aggression in the really early Jam stuff, n Indie does draw a lot from Punk musically...

Weller's one of the first ever gigs in his life was Pistols in Rainbow Theatre in London. He went to see them by a train. The Jam were not a punk band, they have never been, BUT their first album was definitely inspired by punk. It was the end of 70's England, so what else would it be? He loves Motown and soul since his younger age as well. and yes, Doherty and Alex Turner got talent, Barat doesn't.

I wish i could have a seafront stroll with Weller. It wouldn't even need to be a 'seafront stroll' it could be a 'garbage tip stroll' or an 'abattoir stroll' or a 'North Korean stroll' as long as it was with Weller.

Fucking awesome! What a story to be able to tell the grandkids!! Do you remember any other of the 9 or 10 songwriters? Pete Townsend "before he went all Rock Opera shit" i totally understand where Weller if coming from but I mean quadrophenia and tommy as well as Who's Next (all though somewhat scraped) are classics. I love early who as much as the next guy but those 3 albums are genius.
