Have I entered an alternate boarding world where saying a band that is universally considered terrible is terrible is in any way strange behaviour? you = the world. got it.

Just stumbled on Sultans of Swing on YouTube right now. First time I encountered Dire Straits. Song is definitely good enough for me to dig a bit deep, I think.

This is the version of SOS I love personally. My older brother was a big Dire straits fan up to Brothers In Arms so they were played a lot in our house. I have his double vinyl of the alchemy live lp !!

I like Sultans Of Swing, Romeo and Juliet (which I picked for an English project once) and Money For Nothing (fun fact for anyone who didn't know this yet: that's Sting doing the "I want my MTV" bits) but I really HATE Private Investigations.
Knopfler is a great player with a unique style, but I don't like them enough to dig deeper. I don't know, sometimes bands click later with me so it might be different if you ask me in 5 years.

Brother in Arms is a great album, as is Moving Pictures and self titled Debut. Very good band, although they were fashion disasters and cheesy 80's videos might have not helped them been more admired.

Not Dire Straits, but I just wanted a reason to post this. Dire Straits is essentially just Mark Knopfler though so it counts! Never heard that before, sounds great (EDIT: in fact, on second listen it’s unbelievably great!). Again, from the Local Hero soundtrack, this one is beautiful, my favourite use of an acoustic guitar ever. The melody is just beautiful. The one thing that struck me about Knopfler is just how relatively small his ego isn’t and how comfortable he is in not being a star. For a guy who fronted one of the biggest bands in the 1980s with one of the biggest selling albums of all time, he could walk down the street and nobody would bat an eyelid. And for all the immense multi-million pound offers to reform Dire Straits that he’s been offered, the fact he’s not even been tempted is quite astonishing, especially considering there was no animosity to the split. Granted, that’s probably got much to do with the fact him and his band mates have no swagger and lack any rock star charisma! And I think that lack of ‘coolness’ (whatever that is) is actually what is so refreshing about him and them.

I'm not familiar with them beyond the hits, but Walk of Life has to be one of the worst songs in all of popular music.

This has been my new favorite song for about a week now, and since no one had mentioned it in this thread yet I had to. From the 6 minute mark and forward... it might be the best outro I've ever heard, and it is yet to not make me emotional. I really should stop listening to it for a while, because it will inevitably stop to have that affect on me, but I can't.

Dire Straits are an incredible band, their debut and making movies are near flawless albums front to back.

Oh for me it’s undoubtedly their best song - I’m fairly certain this is the tune that prompted me to make this thread 8 years ago as I remember playing it constantly around that time. As you say, the outro nails it as a bonafide masterpiece.
