This is a band I rarely come across on this site. What are your thoughts of them?
I think they're bloody brilliant in all honesty.

I'm not a fan of them to be honest. Never could understand why "Sultans Of Swing" has been on the number 1 on the billboard for months and months when I was younger, but now I do understand why.
This song has got brilliant guitar btw.

I've bought a 'best of' a few months ago and I quite liked it. Sultans Of Swing has always been one of my favourite songs, I can play it on repeat all day and sing and dance and play air guitar ;D

Romeo and Juliet is a beast of a tune. I love "going home" for Newcastle related reasons

Romeo and Juliet is a beast of a tune. I love "going home" for Newcastle related reasons Yeah, Going Home is a beast of an tune - probably my favourite instrumental tune ever. Only discovered it when I watched Local Hero (fantastic film - I recommend that everyone should watch this touching movie) and that Mark Knopfler wrote the score for it.

I honestly have no idea if some of you are trolling. Dire Straits?Yeah, what's wrong with it? Is it because Noel and Liam never mentioned them or are you of the group that only likes music (aside from oasis) that only 500 people have heard of?

Aside from the terrible music? Are you for real? Anyway, Dire Straits are a fantastic band. I grew up listening to them at home and they have an incredible catalogue of songs. Funnily enough I don't like a few of the popular ones (Sultans of Swing and Walk of Life) as they are too cheesy for my liking. Besides those few songs though there is a long list of amazing Dire Straits songs to pick from

Aside from those already mentioned, I want to add Brothers in Arms, Your Latest Trick, and the epic Telegraph Road

As I said, Mark Knopfler wrote the brilliant score to the film Local Hero (one of the best films ever - you'd have no heart if you don't like it. You have to watch it.)
The final scene if fantastic and moving when the main character arrives back home in America from the tiny fishing village in Scotland. The music tops it off.

Aside from the terrible music? Are you for real? Have I entered an alternate boarding world where saying a band that is universally considered terrible is terrible is in any way strange behaviour? Dude are you saying X&Y is a shitty album WTF?!?!

Dude are you saying X&Y is a shitty album WTF?!?!Since when are they universally considered terrible? They were a hugely popular band loved by millions and I am yet to meet a person that hates them (besides you). And Mark Knopfler is one of the most respected men in music. 'Ignorance is Bliss' my arse

Popular is not equal to good, remember that. Anyway, I don't think they're that bad, but there were lots of better bands in their time making more significant and interesting music, so I don't really understand why they are remembered by some people as one of the best bands in the late 70's and 80's, they were just average.

Look, nobody said they were the greatest. Fact is they were really really good - I think it's going a bit far to call them average. I don't think they were the best band of the 1980s but they were in the top 10. Their albums were very well received by critics, hundreds and millions bought their albums and there's no denying they put on great live performances.
Fact is they were miles and miles better than the big bands of today, including the mind baffling popular Kings of Leon (why they are loved is a mystery to me), Muse and Kasabian. Dire Straits were so much better than these bands.

I hate when people use the word interesting when describing music. It usually means they're up their own arse.

If they're so 'universally considered terrible' then how come Brothers In Arms is along with Sgt Pepper, Dark Side of the Moon and (What's The Story) Morning Glory one of the highest selling British albums of all time?
