i suggest you start with "decade," a greatest hits/overview of his first ten years in music. buffalo springfield, crazy horse, csny. (not a bad ten years!)
my favorite records of his are: rust never sleeps harvest everybody knows this is nowhere live at fillmore east 1970 live at massey hall 1971

His newish Greatest Hits record isn't a bad place to start because includes some of his later stuff in addition a lot of the stuff covered on Decade.
In addition to what NYR mentioned, I also really like Live Rust and Freedom, which has Rockin' in the Free World, one of my absolute favorite Neil Young songs.

His new album, Le Noise, is fantastic. Much better than last year's... It's obviously not the place to start if you're just getting into him, but if you're a fan I bet you'll enjoy this album

I've met Neil Young... he signed my copies of On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and his guitar tech gave me one of the plectrums Neil used and dropped on stage during the performance.
Yay me.

Neil Young is a legend not just his solo stuff, but Buffalo Springfield to CSNY I loved his Unplugged and Heart of Gold DVDs. Always have a soft spot for the song "Long May You Run."

Definitely 'Decade'. Also worth buying his new Le Noise album. After that any of the above albums are great.
So much stuff out there though, so start with the greatest hits and work slowly from there.
ENJOY!

Boy, are you in for a treat! I wish I could discover Neil Young for the first time too.
I think there are over 10 essential albums from him, really
Albums that have not been mentioned yet and I like a fucking lot are ''Harvest Moon'' and ''Sleeps With Angels''
And one that I think it's an absolute must is ''Weld'', man that album is the shit!
Neil & Crazy Horse rocking the living shit out of all of those great songs!
Hey Hey My My, Like A Hurricane, Cortez The Killer, Powderfinger, Tonight's The Night, Rockin' In The Free World, Cinnamon Girl, Mansion On The Hill, Fuckin' Up, Welfare Mothers and a few others!, including a cool cover of Blowin' In The Wind!...
Fuck me, pick this one up now! Hell, buy as many as you can and give them away to your loved ones, everyone should listen to this.
Everyone!
