I've only heard Laura Marling, Paul Weller, and The xx from that list. I'm vaguely familiar with Mumford and Sons and Wild Beasts. I'm really not that interested in the British music scene this year.

I'm really not that interested in the British music scene this year. Ditto. The US indie/alt scene has been killing the UK for years now. Post sell-out Dizzee seems like a really weird choice for me. I don't really get why that's there at all. Their dismissal of electronica strikes me as really strange though. A lot of really great dubstep full-lengths have been coming out in the past 12 months and it just doesn't seem right to ignore what is considered internationally to be the most exciting movement in UK music.

Weller doesn't expect to get this. Laura Marling deserves to get a prize like this one. I like one song by Wild Beasts and that's it.
BTW, I saw the members of The XX in the crowds at Holly Miranda in Borderline Club on Monday.

I actually listened to that Wild Beasts record for the first time this week. It's pretty good actually, a lot more interesting than I've come to expect from a British "indie" band. I could say the same about The xx to be honest (although I'd always assumed they were American until recently). Neither are amazing records but they're both pretty idiosyncratic, which is what this whole award's about innit?
Ryan Adams was jizzing about Laura Marling recently so I should probably check her out. After all, this is the guy who turned me on to Gillian Welch.

I saw The XX on the Metropolis festival last year. One song is ok, but I got bored after listening to "aye aye ya..." a thousand times.
Laura Marling is a very talented young lady, seymourstein.
"Indie" means nothing same as what it used to be these days. It's too easy to call any new bands "indie", but after all, none of them are "indie".

Just downloaded the xx album. Currently listening to it now
Really liking xx....very chilled and relaxed. VCR, Islands, and Heart Skipped a Beat, Basic Spheres, Night Time and Stars are my favorites (ha, most of the album)
The only track I don't like is Fantasy.
It's a bit samey and reptitive, but it's a good listen and a good album.

To me the only band who deserved to win this prize was Elbow (2008).

The xx are very, VERY bad live. It just doesn't work. The recorded stuff is ok but they are AWFUL live that makes me feel a little bit better after i missed them. their debut is pretty solid. I have to be in the mood to listen to it but when i am its a great album. I listened to it this week in the dark with good headphones and it fit the music perfectly

Most (not all) bands that win this shitty award don't work out anyway. Look at the winners iver the last few tears for example?

Correlation doesn't always yield causation..... I can understand why The xx wouldnt be good live - the music is too chilled and relaxed and wouldn't be right at a traditional gig environment. However, their debut is indeed very solid.
