Just only got round to listening to their most recent album ' High Violet'. I will be honest. It was the only album i had listened to by The National. Amazing to think it's something like their fifth album. What a great band. True musicians. Very similar to the sound of Elbow, James, Morrissey. Im now listening to their previous album Boxer. What a great band! The Manchester show later this year in November is sold out. Im definitley getting a ticket off ebay. I don't care. Infact i can see the ebay prices going up. Top band!!!!!!

Be sure to also check out Alligator. It was my favorite The National album until High Violet was released. Freaking great band. And, yes, Mimmi will be happy

TheImportance and Mogly know me well now. Don't forget enviro is a huge fan of The National too. ;D I found The National by an accident in the summer of 2007. I was looking on the NPR website and they had the live recording of The National from Philadelphia. I had never heard of them, so I started to listen to it. "Boxer" was just released at that time. I got into them as soon as I heard the opening tune "Start A War". I bought "Boxer". I remember starting the thread about them on here, like this one back then and Mogly recommended me to get Alligator too, so I did. Actaully the music of The National has never changed. Their music is (still) brilliant as years ago, but it seems like the world finally found them with "High Violet". Their music is mature, truly beautiful. I saw them in Paradiso 10 days ago and it was fantastic. They're playing at Crossing Border in November, but I'm not sure if I can make it as I'm seeing Frightened Rabbit one day earlier. "Boxer" has more dark side than "High Violet" and "Alligator" is another brilliant album of them. Their second album "Sad Song For Dirty Lovers" is not very known, but it has got great songs. AND "Available" has still been played live these days!

Was anyone else really disappointed by High Violet?

I got addicted to Anyone's Ghost a few weeks back, the same week I got the cold, and there's a line in there about "stayed home with the flu". Very lame coincidence, I know. Anyway, most of the songs I've heard from them are brilliant.

Was anyone else really disappointed by High Violet? I think you might be the only one. Not to be insulting, I really had yet to hear one bad thing about the album since it leaked. I do respect your opinion though, why did you think it was disappointing?

I gave it a few listens when it originally leaked and it never grabbed me like Boxer and, particularly, Alligator did. Bloodbuzz Ohio is the only thing I find myself coming back to. I kind of got the impression the record was re-treading old ground, which would have been okay, but the songs didn't seem as strong as they were on the previous two albums.
I should give it another listen really.

The album didn't really hit me, on my first listen, until Afraid of Everyone.

I should give it another listen really. I didn't like "Bloodbuz Ohio" when I heard it for the first time cos it's quite poppy for The National, but it was ok as a single. Boxer has got more dark side of The National and Matt Berninger and I loved that darkness, so I found High Violet pretty "light" for The National on my first listen, but I really love High Violet as much as Alligator and Boxer now. Matt Berninger's lyrics have something common to Morrissey's - miserable, hopeless, sensitive and beautiful. To me Alligator is early Spring, Boxer is Autumn and High Violet is early Summer. Their live performance can be quite wild. Berninger jumped off from the stage and got into the audiences nearly in the end of their recent Paradiso gig and he even shared one of his wine bottles with a couple of the audiences. Like TheImportance said, they're a quality band.
