I used to dismiss all the music labeled as rap or hip hop. Guitar driven music was all I was interested in, I thought it was the only 'real' music.
Lately I've been listening to Jay-Z's The Blueprint, Kanye's Late Registration and M.I.A's Kala. I love those albums. It's brilliant music. Lyrics aren't just about pimps and ho's and murders and bling bling. Funk, Soul and even rock music are big influences in these guys.
I know this forum's not the best place to even ask about it, but what should I get next?

+k for that, mogly.
it all depends on your tastes. if you're more into the "band" aspects, i suggest you get "the roots come alive." it's a live album by the roots, the best hip-hop band out there. i would also suggest common's "be," anything by public enemy and dr. dre's "the chronic" and "2001." happy listening!

Absolutely love MIA. She has a flair for musical invention that most of today's guitar bands can only dream of, or can't be bothered to try. Not bowled over by many other 'new' acts but 80s US stuff like De La Soul, Public Enemy and NWA is amazing. Have you checked out 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back'? Incredible album.
If you're into Jay-Z 'The Black Album' is definitely one to get, also have a listen to 'The Grey Album', Danger Mouse's combo of that and 'The White Album', good stuff.

Excellent thread. Been listening to bits of Mos Def's new album, The Estatic, lately. That and I got Madvilliany by Madvillian on the back burner for some time, I gotta give it a listen!
If you guys like MIA, check out Sleigh Bells. Their debut is out in May under MIA's label and tunes we have so far are brilliant sounding. I heard they got a huge crowd at Coachella this year!

Forget about Kanye West and Jay Z and all that lightweight radio friendly hip-hop.
Get into Wu-Tang Clan for the best beats and rhymes.
Start at the beginning with Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers....
Then go for Wu-Tang Forever, Raekwon's Only Built for Cuban Linx, GZA's Liquid Swords and Ghostface's Iron Man.
That is just a starting place, there's so much Wu-Tang stuff to discover (admitedly, they have stretched themselves thin at points.)

This. 36 Chambers and Liquids Swords in particular are masterpieces. I wouldn't underestimate ODB either. Forget about Kanye West and Jay Z and all that lightweight radio friendly hip-hop. Well that's just bullshit. Reasonable Doubt is up there with Ready To Die and Illmatic in the holy trinity of mid 90s NY albums. I got Madvilliany by Madvillian on the back burner for some time, I gotta give it a listen! You sure do!
