I always thought it was another atheist themed song, albeit it not quite as direct or obvious as CARRY US ALL. I don't deny that's a thought that runs through his mind with those lyrics, but he'd never explicitly write a song centred around atheism. Think Noel would gag at the thought of being seen as some preachy protest singer. It's all about universal emotions and sentiments, the defiance and self belief that brings you through rather than the idea of fate. The atheistic line is just something that drives that defiance.

...but he'd never explicitly write a song centred around atheism... Then what is CARRY US ALL about?

Like a lot of Noel’s songs its open to interpretation. But i always saw it as being about gaining independence and freedom in life. The verse sets up how youve always got someone in life controlling or blaming you.
And one fine day, “you’ll leave [them] all behind” to gain control of your life. You know some of your life has passed, hence “it wouldnt be so bad if [you] had more time”. But still, youll move on “down the river” to find a better life. And if it means being alone, you dont care as you “dont mind being on [your] own”.
How its always come across to me.
