I am doing a study on music for one of my classes. Its about social issues. I pick the oasis song "Listen Up". I was just wounder if any of you oasis fans can help me understand its meaning? Does it talk about any social issues? Thanks in advance Cheers!

ummm...kind of "day by day theres a man in a suit whos gonna make you pay/ for the thoughts that you think and the words the wont let you say"
could be about how government/law enforcement (man in a suit) bans things/censors things and obviously the song portrays that action negatively...
its about wanting freedom and not having to deal with crap i think

If you want one about social issues, go for Up in the SKy. On the DM documntary on the DVD, Noel talks about it being an anti-establishmnt song, about how thatcher and the conservatives were so out of touch with the reality of working class england.
As for listen up, I think jakecostenza's interpretation is close, but moreso I think its about yearning, as almost every song on The Masterplan is. "One Fine Day"...to..."I don't mind being on my own" says it all I think.

Noel's lyrics mean fuck all. You're having a laugh. Almost all of the songs on both DM and The Masterplan make sense, and have a theme of growing up, and being free and young. Even their other b-sides like D'yer Wanna Be a Spaceman have the same meaning. WTSMG and BHN have some great one liners and couplets. "Some might say they don't believe in heaven, go and tell it to the man who lives in hell" is brilliant. Some might say you know nowt. SOTSOG is the dark, hangover album, and that's seen in WDIAGW, SMC, GP, etc which all make sense HC is shit, but the good tunes do make sense. DBTT - You're telling me that POTQ, TIOBI, etc have no meaning? Make no sense? DOYS has some good lyrics too. Noel's lyrics make no sense? Come off it.

I kinda always thought that Listen Up was about being an athiest. Like that part about "I don't believe in magic, life is automatic..." or "I'm sailing down a river alone." It kinda makes sense if you think of it like that.

Listen Up, like a lot of Noel's songs, doesn't have a particular meaning imo. I think it has a general theme - being at a crossroads in life - but not about one thing in particular.

Knowing Noel it was something like "hmm what rimes with 'pay'? ah, 'say'!"
Joking aside I think they are one of the greatest Oasis' lyrics in my opinion.
These lyrics teach you stuff, they fucking teach you man!

its a song about life when you're caught at a crossroad. Its about being content with yourself. Its all about the individual. For me at least.

Noel's lyrics mean fuck all. i tend to agree with you. he ain't dylan, that's for sure. they mean a lot to me wouldnt be an oasis fan otherwise i think he's got some great lines, but i think it's more along the lines of, "what words sound best with this music?" and blow it out your ass, l4e.

The Turning is a song about milk. K+ Tell ya the secret, here how Noel writes a song: He suddenly comes up with a nice line about drugs or boredom or something, Than he sorrounds it with....whatever rhymes! (and shiiines.....)

lol.
it was in an extensive interview he did in Dairy Falmer's Weekly magazine.
he said he was taking a sip of tea one morning when he realised the milk was off- "fuckinhell!! thats the second time this week that has happened!!" he thought to himself....
who would have thought noel was a semi skimmed guy?? i'd always had him down as a silver top fan.
its a cracking interview- he also eveals he prefers real butter to "all that i cant believe its not butter crap" i will scan it later......

anyone have a clue what supersonic and/or shakermaker are about?! Shakermaker, in my view, is an Anglocentric take on the Noel's youth in probably the seventies. Mr Soft is a cleansing product (I think) that was on sale in those days, plus you have references to Mr Benn, which was a popular kids cartoon in Britain then - quite a trippy cartoon it was. Supersonic - I'll leave that to you!

Cigarettes and Alcohol would be your best bet for social commentary. When someone who has no education or means to get a job coupled with the fact that there's nothing in his/her life "worth working for", you get a culture or generation of uninspired, hopeless kids who turn to alcohol or drugs as a means of escape from their mundane lives. Great song. "Common People" by Pulp also touches on class stature and it's effects on people's lives as well. Also a great song.

This thought came back to me, and generally think the song doesn't mean anything specifically. But it carries general themes that run through Noel's earlier songs.
Defiance, solitude, making it through life by yourself... by all accounts, he's always been a bit of a loner. Not in the sense he has no social networks but somebody happy in his own company.
I always liked that about Noel's songs. Never self pitying, and doesn't take a 'woe is me' approach to loneliness, or more accurately, solitude. Rare for songwriters to embrace that.

I always thought it was another atheist themed song, albeit it not quite as direct or obvious as CARRY US ALL.
