Feel sorry for him, but he wasn't going to make or break England's chances so it's not too much of a blow for us

And what has supporting Newcastle got to do with hating the England national team? No one in Ireland likes the England team yet we all support an English team.

My gran is Irish, she supports England and I've always supported Ireland in sporting events, no-one here really gives a fuck. You just can't let go though can you? Have you got no local team you can support?

The league of Ireland is shit because soccer is the 4th most popular sport over here.

Most of us don't hold a historical grudge. Every other country within the british isles, or Ireland hate us yet support our clubs. Strange don't you think? There are still a fair amount of Englishmen playing the prem, not enough though I'll give you that but that makes little difference to what we are talking about. Your team are playing in a league with a lot more Englishmen anyway. Why don't you have a Local team? Do you live in a lighthouse? Oh and you called it 'soccer' ffs.

Nearest was cork but I think they're totally gone now Well I'm pretty sure you have a football league in Ireland you could take an interest in. Its not that you support an English team really, its that you want our national team to fail. It seems a contradiction to me. It winds me up equally when the scots never have a good word to say about the English but sure enough lot are supporting English teams. Its a load of shite.

tom, isn't it true that many fans in england really don't like the national team? i got that impression whenever i watched int'l matches. (or is it just certain players they boo?) As a Manchester United fan I can say with no hesitation that most of us resent the national side, but then our resentment is born out of a deep-seated hatred, or lack of respect for many of the players that represent England at international level. And that's before you get to the fans, the same two-faced morons who make it their business to abuse my club and its players, or at least until one of them equals the difference between success and failure. I'll be following England at the World Cup, naturally, but the truest pleasure I'll derive from doing so will be in seeing the trophy in the hands of the players that turn out at Old Trafford week in, week out. Otherwise, I couldn't really give a toss.

Its mainly certain players and usually due to their indiscretions off the field that have been in the tabloids that particular week. Although many football fans here are more interested in their club over the national side, in a way I understand as that's the team they invest their time and money in season after season but that's not to say do not support the national side in the tournaments. You'll still never see the bars and pubs fuller than when England are playing a world cup match.

I want to be surrounded in that atmosphere, and how crazy it would be if by some chance we get into the final and/or win the entire thing (won't happen, I think this is Spain's for the taking, but who knows....)

I think you'll find that the majority of Scottish people won't support England at football because the media down there build England up for months on end before a tourney like the WC, and it gets very very boring, especially when the team never live up to the hype when it matters. And another thing that gets very annoying is the way the English media jump on the chance to call any successful Scottish sports person (Andy Murray, Chris Hoy etc), British, but then can't wait to put the boot in to us if we fail at any sport. It's like having a big brother who is always bragging about how much better he is at you at everything.

Trust me, it's boring for us too. Or at least those of us who actually follow the game 52 weeks of the year and happen to support a half-decent side.
