It's not really a contest. Squire was a good guitarist, but lost the plot once he tried being Jimmy Page mk.2. Marr has always been original and is consistent up to this day, Ignore The Ignorant has some great guitar work.

I'm a fan of both, but an even bigger fan of Johnny Marr. His guitar work is a lot more original. My favourite guitar player ever.

Definitely Marr. Squire's guitar playing is undoubtedly great, but far too often it descended into nothing but abysmal fret wankery. Just listen to what he did with Champagne Supernova.
Having said that, I don't think there's a guitarist who's ever managed to do a decent job of that guitar solo, with the exception of Noel. And that includes Marr.
Even Weller's album version is garbage.

Marr. I agree with supersonic on this one. When Squire wasn't on coke he was just as good but some times his solos became self indulgent and had very little to no melody. Marr has that signature sound and over 20 years has been original and hasn't let himself slip into his own ego. But even Marr can't stop Modest Mouse from being shit.
still though Squire's solos on "I'am The Resurrection" and "Tear" remain as some of my favorite solos.

I think a more worthwhile comparison would be Johnny Marr and Jonny Greenwood. I'd have a hard time with that one. Marr. I agree with supersonic on this one. Marr has that signature sound and over 20 years has been original and hasn't let himself slip into his own ego. They've made some fucking great albums and are immense live, with or without Johnny.

Well maybe I shouldn't say complete shit but I can't stand Isaac Brock's singing at all.

It was a tough decision but I voted Johnny Marr. Been listening to the live version of 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' a lot recently and I think it might just be the greatest guitar work I have ever heard.

Even Weller's album version is garbage. I can't believe I'm answering to 7 years old post but... Isn't that Champagne Supernova performance from the 1st night? I read John had only one day to learn the song and he wasn't quite sure what to do when being on the stage. There's another video on youtube (from the 2nd night I belive) and John sounds so much better in that. And Marr vs Squire. I think it would be fair to compare Marr to 80s Squire but after that he changed his style too much. He clearly became Jimmy Page V2 during the 90s. And I don't think it's too much to say that he was Page's "2nd coming", he was that good. But then things started to go wrong... Drugs, leaving Stone Roses etc. Wasted talent I'd say. Johnny Marr is definitely up there with other guitar legends and everyone knows that.

Been listening to the live version of 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others' a lot recently and I think it might just be the greatest guitar work I have ever heard. I am 8 months late with this reply, but that is actually my all time favorite song any band any genre any era any anything. And I actually hate the singing and the lyrics. How many people hate the singing and lyrics on their favorite song? Well, that should tell you how much I like Johnny Marr's music there.
Ever since Oasis' first large scale personnel change, I have dreamed of John Squire on lead, Marr on rhythm, and Noel on bass in Oasis. That is my fantasy. And I believe the idea originated from a Noel interview way back then with some variant of a supergroup lineup. Would be a freakin' Britpop fan's dream come true..
I wonder the two's opinions of each other. I have read Squire deny Marr as an influence. And I know Marr hates the kind of stuff like on Second Coming. I think Going South is awesome, but Marr is pretty outspoken about style preferences.
Badass topic on a badass forum. I actually do a wide Google search on this exact topic periodically, because I like the two guitarists so much (Marr is my all time favorite).

John Squire. Might have a lot to do with the fact that like The Stone Roses miles more than The Smiths (can't wait to see them at Wembley!!) but for me he's the Jimmy Page of the 90s.

Both great guitarists, but Marr never became self-indulgent by releasing fret wanking crap like Second Coming. However, even when accounting for Squire at his best, I find Marr's melodies and style a lot more nuanced and nimble - a lot more sophisticated in my opinion. EDIT: Whoops, already replied in this thread 8 years ago.
