Tonight's England-Holland game, for instance, is nothing but a meaningless and unnecessary distraction to pre-season preparations for both player and club. It's nights like tonight that create unwanted tension between club and international managers when it comes to releasing players for competitive games.

most friendlies are utterly pointless but I don't wanna agree with NL4E and supersonic in the same thread, I'm afraid the forum might implode all I'm going to say is these dates are FIFA dates previously settled so the teams know when they have to give their players, so suck it or lie like Manchester City with Tevez's injury ;D

It's nights like tonight that create unwanted tension between club and international managers when it comes to releasing players for competitive games. yeah, allthough friendlies are not that pointless, i can understand that managers are not happy with the fixings. but fact is: last week was CL and Euroleague qualification (and i think the week before), there is CL qualification next week, then we have national cups, league and so on and on... this international day was the only opportunity for WC qualification for some countries. okay, you can argue wether it makes sense to play a friendly, but i don't see a general problem with that date. i mean, nobody argues wether it makes sense to make a US tour as preperation for the season (wich is absolutely stupid!). the problem with players playing more and more games is not caused by the international matches! oh and i personally would be proud, if a player of my team played for the national team instead of moaning that he could be injured.
