hey’ve had more break-ups than Britney Spears has had breakdowns, but I can exclusively reveal that The Verve have now well and truly split. The legendary indie band have been blighted by rows since forming in 1990. It turns out this time band members Nick McCabe and Simon Jones have not spoken to lead singer Richard Ashcroft since their gig at V Festival last August, despite trying on numerous occasions to hold out an olive branch. “As far as Nick and Simon are concerned The Verve no longer exists,” a source close to the lads tells me. “They think Richard was just using the reunion as a vehicle to get his solo career on track.” The Britpop boys announced a reunion in June 2007 and went on a sold-out tour, releasing number one album Forth last summer. But the old tensions soon came back, centred on guitarist Nick’s wild partying. “Their management called Simon and Nick in for a crisis meeting in September. They were told that Richard refused to tour or work with them again as long as Nick continued to drink. He quickly cleaned up his act.” But it’s not as if Simon and Nick are sitting on their bums waiting for the next reunion – they’ve already started up their own band, apparently called The Black Ships. Nick writes on his MySpace page: “The Verve seems to be on holiday and shows no sign of not being on holiday. I’ve been hesitant to breach Official Secrets-style policy with any missives from the, well, from any front, basically. Don’t ask me anything about the big V. Just let me enjoy my non-alcoholic Piña Colada.” Simon told fans: “The Black Ships are coming!” My mole says: “There have been too many problems to put behind them. If Richard came back with cap in hand they’d tell him to f*** off.” Surely if those feuding Gallaghers can play nice, why not The Verve? www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2009/08/09/the-gigs-don-t-work-the-verve-finally-call-it-a-day-115875-21582950/i know its from the mirror but still and after reading the article about Doves (but by another not so good source the sun) maybe not recording again. Thoughts on this?

No surprise....
Blue Pacific Ocean is the last track from the Verve... And unreleased... This track is probably better than the last album...
Richard Ashcroft still great... But it's a shame for the Verve...

No surprise. As much as I love Richard, I don't doubt any of what is said above and it really makes him look like a fucking dick.

Who knows. Maybe they'll get back together after Richard's next solo album. From what I know, he has one more solo record on his contract.

I just wish that McCabe had a solid and consistent outlet for his guitar playing.

Hands up anyone who's never buying another one of Ashcroft's distinctly average solo records.

Good, because Forth was complete garbage. I bought it but think I listened to it about twice - it was just a pale imitation of a cross between Urban Hymns and Storm In Heaven.
If they're not going to make a proper comeback and release some decent material then it's best they do as little damage to their legacy as possible.
It is a shame though that you have two huge talents in Ashcroft and McCabe yet they can't seem to work together. I was one of the few people who really liked much of Human Conditions but Keys To The World was embarrassingly bad (Sweet Brother Malcolm, anyone?), apart from Break The Night With Colour which was head and shoulders above anything else on that album.
Ashcroft needs to get his head out of his arse and work out how to stop squandering the talent we all know is there. He's running out of time to prove he's still got it in him to go down as a great British songwriter.
Trouble is I understand he suffers from a lot of depression which hampers him. But it would be very sad if he continues failing to fulfil his potential.

To be honest, I thought they were finished last December anyway. I try to find info on them all the time, but I just couldn't find any.
No news is bad news I think - well in this circumstance.

Forth is solid. It gives the listener a good idea of what the verve are about but it kinda gives them something new too. Its not as good as the first three but for a band that hadn't made in album in 11 years its damn good. There's been no official news so I'm still sort of holding out. If they don't do anything after Richards next solo album i think it would be safe to assume their demise. Simon Jones did say this is something they won't try to throw away but then again they all said stuff like this back in the Urban Hymns days.

Forth was my favourite album this decade. It's hard to get into it, but every track has something to offer. I really didn't think much of itwhen it was released - I just liked Love is Noise (amazing track anyway you look at it), Rather Be (the sole track that didn't grow, seems kinda bland now), Valium Skies (which is and will always be amazing) and Appalachian Springs (one of my favourite Verve tracks ever). About a year on I gave it a few more listens. Sit and Wonder is just great music for the soul 'n' all that. Numbness, which had seemed like a huuuge drone, really stands up, sounds like Pink Floyd or something, gotta love it. Even I See Houses, which really ain't more than an out-of-place Ashcroft solo song has that really nice "turning you into another guy" ending that makes it sound unique. But the big surprise for me was Columbo. Now that's amazing music. Love the bass. Love it all. Frees the mind, or something. Forth is probably my favourite verve album. Shame they had to split up just now.

A Northern Soul is their only album that really sounds like a band playing together. Ashcroft is barely noticeable in the first album, and Urban Hymns and Forth are basically Ashcroft solo albums. It's all pretty good, but I vastly prefer A Northern Soul to the others.

It's all pretty good, but I vastly prefer A Northern Soul to the others. Easily my least favourite Verve album. For me, four or five of the songs on there are close to intolerable.

Northern Soul does have This Is Music, History and On Your Own, which are easily the best work they've done. The title track and Stormy Clouds are pretty cool, but all the other songs sound too similar to each other. I mean, Stormy Clouds/Drive You Home/So It Goes/Life's an Ocean are pretty much the same 7minute drone with a driving bass, being stormy clouds the best of the batch. I just can't like No Knock On My Door (which is pretty much a weak Northern Soul) nor A New Decade (which is This Is Music x 0,00001).
A Storm In Heaven sound really ethereal, and all that, but I only really like a couple of tracks (Slide Away, Butterfly, Already There, See You In The Next One)
Urban Hymns is a classic, although a little too much Ashcroft. I love all the tracks, can't really choose a favourite (Come On? Catching the Butterfly? This Time? Weeping Willow..?)
Forth was great for a comeback album. Just imagine if they had a new non-comeback album? But it seems like they blew that chance...

I was really hopeful in the aftermath of Forth...I mean they wrote a ton of good songs in a relatively short period of time for that album, I thought they could sit down and do it again
Guess we just have to wait for Richard to get head head out of his ass
