Starting from the 50's, or however far back you want, thats when I'm starting, name the player you think is the greatest in each decade up to the 2000's. 50's - Alfredo Di Stefano. I've seen some videos of him play and combined with the fact he was part of the all mighty Madrid squad of the 50's which won five straight European Cups, and argubly was the talisman of the squad, he has to be the greatest player of the 50's. Football would never be the same. 60's - George Best. Tough one here, a very tough one but tbh, Pele played in a shit league and got to look good every 4 years in a World Cup. Best played terrorized everybody he played against, in a league where defenders took no shit and would chop you down with no regret. Pele was targeted viciously during World Cup's but that's every 4 years, not every week and for Best to do what he did against that, he truly was the best player of the 60's imo. 70's - Johan Cruyff. Total football. One of the greatest, if not THE greatest player never to win a World Cup. 80's - Diego Maradona. Probably the greatest of all time, he is in alot of people's eyes and despite his trickery in the 86' world cup against us, only minutes later he scored what many say to be the greatest goal of all time. Took Napoli to the heights of Europe and Argentina to the top of the world. Messi is what people call the nearest to Maradona but imo, he isn't. No-one is. Gary Lineker in 2nd, because its Gary Lineker, greatest player of all time, past, present and future from 12 inches. 90's - Roy Keane. Bit of bias here, if not Keane, then Brazillian Ronaldo. As a United fan, I look at Keane to be an idol, almost a God. If the team were playing shit, he'd make them feel like shit until they played well. The Juventus match in 99', Champions League Semi's, knowing he couldn't play in the final if we made it, he played his heart out in near enough a one man game and without him, we wouldn't of won and things would be completely different to what they are now. A true legend, a true footballer, the last of his kind. 00's - Thierry Henry. Magical. At his peak, the early 00's, he was brilliant and still is. Should be in everybody's greatest 11, or atleast on the bench for that. I applaud his goal against us back in 2000, and if you haven't seen it, just search Thierry Henry, you'll find it within a minute. Sheer footballing genius. Arsenal need a guy like him now, they need the experience he is surely passing onto the likes of Messi and Bojan. A true great.

To call the brazilian league ''shit'' is quite ignorant, and to pick Best over Pelé, even more so mid 90's - mid 00's - Zinedine Zidane

Keane? Best? Really? I'd pick Ronaldo, he was unstoppable. Even in 2003, after 2 years of injuries that would have retired any other player, he was the best striker. I've read many journalist that think he's the best scorer of the last 20 years, and he would have reached Maradona's level if his knees were ok. Zidane can't be forgotten either, he reached the max level with his national team and Real Madrid. He had the best technique I've ever seen. I think this decade is the hardest to choose, there has not been a big dominating team. Henry at his peak is a good choice too, I'll say Zizou. Nothing to say about the rest. 50's: Di Stéfano 60's: Pelé 70's: Cruyff 80's: Maradona 90's: Ronaldo 00's: Zidane in a league where defenders took no shit and would chop you down with no regret. that didn't happen just in England, man.

50's: Di Stefano 60's: Bobby Moore (You must be either Irish or not English) 70's: Franz Beckenbauer 80's: Johnny Warren 90's: Jurgen Klinnsmann (I think?) 00's: Rio Ferdinand

All I'm going to say is:
'00s: Henry.
He may have gone down hill since his last season with Arsenal - although he had a mega season this year with Barca, mind, he dominated 1999-2007.
People talk about Ronaldinho - sure, he has more party tricks than TH14, but I'd pick the former Arsenal captain over him any day.
How any one on here could suggest a player other than Henry for the '00 decade is beyond me.

50s Ferenc Puskás 60s Pele 70s Beckenbauer (wins slightly over cruyff because of the world cup of 1974, eventhough both won three European Champions' Cups in a row, i think) 80s Maradona (to me the best of ALL time) 90s Paolo Maldini 00s Zidane

50's: Fucking Di Stéfano. Argh, it hurts to sat that, but it's true. 60's: Pelé. (Best, seriously?) 70's: Definitely Cruyff. 80's: El Diego. 90's: Ronaldo, hands down, best centre-forward I've ever seen. 00's: The Zidane option is valid, more than Ronaldinho's, sure, but I'll go with Henry. From '00 to '06 he was way more constant than the other two.

60's: Pelé. (Best, seriously?) Since the almighty Pele himself once stated that Best was the best player in the world, then I'd say it's a valid claim for anyone to make. Unless, of course, we're to assume that his collection of medals and personal accolades is ultimately worthless. Bah, this whole venture is daft anyway. My first game was in 1993, for fucks sake.

Best could have been the best player in the world, as was Ronaldinho for some time, but not the best in the decade for sure.

i dont personally give a shit about Ronaldo, Cantona would fucking stare him down in any game. He was a genius, given, but Cantona was a genius (maybe to a lesser extent) but he had CHARACTER, and he could win u a game without touching the ball.

Yeah i am. Cristiano Ronaldo's still young and even though he has definitely left his footprint in United's history, I don't think its fair to include him in any list of "greatest footballers ever" YET

You guys forget Romario, he was an incredible striker, in 94 world cup he owned the tournament he was at their best and won the cup. Johan Cruyff once defined him as genius of the goal area, if you pass the ball to him in the goal area it's 95% goal. He scored 1000 gols.

I think it's safe to say that Best probably had just as much raw talent as Pele, but Pele ultimatley was a better player than him because he dedicated himself to the game pretty much won everything that he could. Best was obviously never going to win the WC with Northern Ireland, but even at club level he never made the best of his talents as he was too busy getting pished and shagging a string of Miss Worlds.
