They've been going for nearly thirty years, all of them are in their late fourties/early fifties, they've released over fifteen main albums, and they still kick fucking ass. They rarely use standard tuning, rather making up their own for whatever fits, they stick drum sticks behind their strings, and have a (so far) eight album series of noise/improv sets.
Amazed this band hasn't been mentioned very often, but considering they've just release a new album this year, I figured to try and see if there's any other fans out there. For those who don't know them, here's more of their accessible/popular (if you could call them that) tunes:
Teen Age Riot:
Incinerate:
Bull In The Heather:

They're amazing, it's incredible how they still rock and how the new album is so awesome, and it's the fifteenth! Anti-Orgasm is one of the best songs of this year, for sure

... and Thurston Moore still only looks about 30!
Their performances on Nigel Godrich's From The Basement are well worth checking out!

A bit too inconsistent though, kinda frustrating actually.
But when they're on, oh man!

A bit too inconsistent though, kinda frustrating actually. But when they're on, oh man! spot on! Their early albums are almost unlistenable to me. EVOL is still too abstract for my liking but some good things came out of that cos then they recorded Sister, Daydream Nation and Goo back to back. Dirty is kinda weird cos sometimes I love it and sometimes I can't stand it. I haven't listened to the new one but if it's half as good as Murray Street, Sonic Nurse or Rather ripped I'll be pleased. Thurston is a genius at what he does even if I don't exactly get it half of the time. LOL

Hmmm -- I grew up listening to Sonic Youth. But then I guess I just forgot about them, or rather, got bored with them.
I haven't listened to them in maybe 10 years, but seeing this thread, maybe I'll check out what their up to now.

LOL It's definitely not as good as Sonic Nurse or Murray Street, two absolutely brilliant albums, but it's better then Rather Ripped (though not a tune on it that I like more then Incinerate).

Incinerate is a great tune, that lead riff is brilliant.

their within you without you cover is way better than oasis'. Other than that...Bull in the heather & Kool Thing are cool...and the 'Superstar' cover is mega beautiful

I liked Kool Thing at first, don't really like it now. Dunno, but the only time I hear that riff now is when I listen to Mary Christ. That and My Friend Goo are the two tunes I skip on Goo.
