Let's say cut off this past week's record releases. My vote for best record this year is the Dove's Kingdom of Rust. Btw, light year for LPs so far.

It's a toss up between Kingdom of Rust and West Pauper Ryder Lunatic Asylum

Until The Earth Begins To Part - Broken Records
Fantastic debut album by a fantastic band. Not only the best album of this year, but definitely one of the best albums all the time to me.

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers so far for me.
This year has been a tad slow, but usually the early half of the year is. For me anyway August / September boasts new albums from Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Editors, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains so it's going to be a very interesting next few months..

I'd go with Journal for Plague Lovers. Is it just me, or was last year a whole lot better music-wise than this year (so far)?
Edit: I'll give an honorable mention to the new Wilco album too.

Fight Like Apes - 'Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion'
Cutesy, annoying song titles aside, this semi-Irish pop/punk band provide the requisite pop hooks as well as the shouty/screaming hardcore grind.
Eels - Hombre Lobo
For me, this guy Mark 'E' Everett puts out one masterpiece after another and never gets the credit he deserves, Mark chose to turn up the electric guitars for this set of songs, but the ballads are as heartbreakingly gorgeous and lyrically acute as ever.
The Phenomenal Handclap Band - The Phenomenal Handclap Band
A New York-based collective with a nifty line in dance, funk, hip-hop fusion as well as psychedelic and classic soul influences, check the truly extraordinary drum track on this cut.
My favourite song of the year though, they haven't had an album out yet, are this Manchester band with the dull name Everything Eveything with this fantastic, endlessly catchy tune.

I thought of one more that deserves a mention, though it's technically a rerelease. The Rural Alberta Advantage's Hometowns is quite good. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel-esque indie folk, you'd probably enjoy it. The lyrics aren't quite as good as NMH, but I do look forward to their next release.

West Ryder, Lungs, Horehound, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Journal For Plague Lovers are up there. Still getting into Primary Colours (The Horrors), It's Blitz! (Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs), My Maudlin Career (Camera Obscura)... And lots of stuff I haven't listened to yet like Pheonix, Grizzly Bear, The Eternal (Sonic Youth), Dark Was The Night...
