news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8109969.stmGreat news - I'm hoping he's one of these Sol Campbell type characters - he's big and very strong - something we have been crying out for for a few years now. Let's hope he's better than the current loons at centre back. The central defence simply isn't good enough. Toure, although being at Arsenal now for a number of years, isn't as good as everyone thought he was - he's very capable but he needs a big strong guy beside him, because he can't lead the back line like Terry, Ferdinand and Carragher. Hopefully, Vermaelen, with his experience as Ajax captain, will deliver the good. Now the main priority just now is a defensive midfielder. Just like Vermaelen, he needs to be big and strong, and should be able to pass, something that cannot be said of Denilson and Song. I don't know about you, but those two players are just terrible. Song is far from the finished article and although performing well against Manchester United in the league recently, he is just inconsistent. Denilson? Absolutely rubbish - the guy is far too small and gets pummeled too easily in the Premier League. Also, his passing leaves a lot to be desired about. I mean, to highlight our problem, take the Champions League Semi Final second leg. Both Song and Denilson were doing the DM job, and both were horrific. In the build up to Park's goal which was built through the centre of midfield before going out wide to expose Sagna, Song and Denilson were out of position and as a rusult to their AWOLness, it was down to young Gibbs, who unfortunately slipped up. If the holding midfielders had done their jobs there and then, Man Utd wouldn't have scored. I mean TWO players?! Darren Fletcher was doing the same job on his own and did it marvellously! We've got a defender, so our next 'essential' isa quality defensive midfielder.

can't say i know much of Vermaelen, but it's certainly a position that arsenal needed to strengthen

Yup, DC, DM, Striker are 3 essential needs.
A quality GK would be good, too, but Almunia is decent enough and the other 3 positions are more important. Strong DM and a solid striker and we're back in contention again, I reckon.

He was just a decent player at Ajax, not outstanding or anything good luck with him, I think there are better options available for the same amount of money
