It's Time To Let Britpop Die With Dignity The Gallaghers turned the '90s into barren retro-rock desert, argues Mark Beaumont Britpop. It’s become such a dirty word I’m amazed my laptop doesn’t automatically asterisk the vowels. Think ‘punk’ and you instantly picture John Lydon snarling like a Pekingese with piles, think ‘grunge’ and you see a kohl-eyed Cobain, think ‘new rave’ and you envisage a clearly ‘refreshed’ Klaxons waving the Mercury Prize. check out the whole article www.live4ever.us/2009/05/how-oasis-murdered-britrock

As if The fucking Klaxons are any good at anything then waving their day-glow sticks around sounding like a second rate MGMT (whose debut came out a year after them!).
But yeah, Oasis inadvertently killed the scene. It's not their fault that a million wannabes sprung up in their place, though I'd doubt even the author could keep a straight face while talking highly of the Suede or Dodgy.
And I always thought the Sex Pistols were overrated garbage.

Oasis killed Brit Rock momentarily, but they also gave it the kickstart it needed and made it one of the most prominent genres in the world for a few years.

Depends..... I'm not really sure. I think it was going to die anyway. At least it imploded.

Britpop was dying on its arse for at least 6 months before Be Here Now was released anyway.
You're lucky that most of it never made its way across the pond. It was really, embarrasingly shit!

Loved britpop back in the 90's. Buying Shine compilation cd's every 6 months or so, TFI Friday having some superb bands on (Before Chris Evans let the likes of Boyzone/Spice Girls on it and it went downhill). Top of the Pops full of great indie bands and not the usual boy bands.
Plus of course i was working, going down the pub tons, having a laugh, all dayers on a saturday etc. Great times !

I never really think of Oasis as britpop as they were there own genre... they are the only band that has sustained success around the world compared to pulp, blur, supergrass, ocean colour scence, etc ..
but loads say that be here now was the end of britpop

Be Here Now single-handedly killed off BritPop

He didn't really explain how Oasis "killed off Britpop" did he? Or did I miss something?

Britpop was shit. Oasis were brilliant.
I never considered Oasis a part of britpop. If Be Here Now Killed Britpop then thats another reason to turn it up even louder!
