billboard.com ENGLISH BEAT Dear Gary, Last year, both Oasis and the Verve released new albums. Since Oasis' "Be Here Now" in 1997, it seems that the group's subsequent studio albums have sold less. I was surprised at the high placement that Oasis' "Dig Out Your Soul" achieved on the Billboard 200 last year (debuting at No. 5), but despite its high initial ranking, it subsequently dropped off the chart after five weeks. I was wondering what the sales figures are to date for "Dig Out Your Soul" and if the group's back catalog has received a boost in sales. The Verve's fourth studio album, "Forth," debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200, and like Oasis' latest, faded relatively quickly. Could you also please tell me the sales to date for that album? Thank you, Arthur Williams Camarillo, CA Hi Arthur, Both British bands enjoyed their biggest successes (and in Oasis' case, tabloid headlines, too) in the '90s, but they're still making music that's reaching their fans. In October, Oasis' "Dig Out Your Soul" became its first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 since "Be Here Now" 11 years earlier. The lead single from "Dig," "The Shock of the Lightning," likewise became its highest-charting song on the Modern Rock radio chart (No. 12) since 1997, when "Don't Go Away" reached No. 5. The new "Dig Out Your Soul" has sold 116,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. 2005's "Don't Believe the Truth" has sold 202,000; 2002's "Heathen Chemistry," 154,000; and 2000's "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants," 208,000. The band's catalog sales have not shown any robust increases since the release of "Dig." Of all the band's albums, 1995's "(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?" has sold the most to date (3,931,000). "Be Here Now" ranks second (1,013,000). The Verve returned to the Billboard 200 in September after 10 years with "Forth," which, like "Urban Hymns" in 1998, peaked at No. 23. "Urban Hymns" has sold 1,358,000 since its 1997 release. Sales of "Forth" stand at 53,000. www.billboard.com/bbcom/thisday/ask-billboard-mariah-carey-abba-oasis-the-1003934063.story

The thing is oasis make music for thier fans not the sales, they make thier money through gigs ( which let's face it aren't extrodinary prices for tickets) and if you look at charts nowadays the music is so poor it's not even worth trying to promote singles

Arthur Williams - what's his deal? What a weird question.
But anyway - I'm surprised DOYS sold only 100,000, thought it would've been more for some reason.

First of all that response was from a few months back so I am sure DOYS has sold a bit more. However, the die hard Oasis fans in the U.S. have got DOYS already. Others that 'might be fans' probably do with Oasis what a lot of people do on here for other bands that are not their favorite. They probably either get a copy made from someone, get a PM from a fan site or download free like the maybeherenow site etc. As far as the bigger sellers. www.riaa.comDM has gone platinum (1 million + sales) MG 4x Platinum BHN Platinum I would guess those 3 plus the combination of all the others has Oasis around 7 million records sold in the U.S. I would say they broke the U.S. market.

Only reason its at 120 thousand, nobody in this new generation under 18 buys CD's anymore, i would know, im in high school, in the Canada and US, to be even close with 2005 or 2002 is amazing considering the large increase of downloads such as limewire.

what would it be if you include all vinyl and itunes album sales? surely double that, i would think

He's totally right I use Limewire, Torrents, and even a youtube converter b4 I buy cds and I'm in High School 2. Most kids don't buy cds. So, if you think abouth it 120,000 is really like between 240,000-280,000. Of course I do buy Oasis cds gotta support the band, but for artists there is no way I'm buying a cd.

Actually, even the update to 120,000 is kinda old. That was reported around early February. So its prob. higher now.

The fact that DM probably sold much lower than WTSMG/BHN in the US speaks volumes. Sure, no one in the US heard of Oasis in 1994, fair play. But with the success of WTSMG you would think, like many Britons, the Yanks would have checked out their only other album. But nope.
This leads me to believe, more than ever, that the US depends on commercialization way too much. That's why bands like The Stone Roses and The Smiths continue to be vastly underappreciated and overall unknown here in the States --> If it's not frequently played on the radio, no one will buy it.
