Pick up the new album and have spun it about 9-10 times since Tuesday Night. It's a completely underwhelming effort from The Boss. In the wake of 2 excellent E-Street Albums this decade, this is the third. This album comes about 15 months or so after 07's Magic, which is a great E-Street Album.
I've got all the Bruce albums, except the live ones. I had high expectations after hearing "My Lucky Day" and the title track "working on a dream." , I'd say this album would have been great as an Ep. There's about 4 really good songs. A couple of good album tracks. The rest are very forgettable. The album sounds much more like a Bruce solo record than a Bruce & The EStreet Band record. The Band is SORELY missed.
And I think Bruce wrote his worst song ever, "Queen of the Supermarket." If you want to laugh give that tune a spin.

The one Bruce album I never listen to. Likewise with most of Human Touch. An album that dangerously plays close to the ignorant stereotype for his haters. Brendan O Briens production is dreck, likewise with Magic with the sound blasted, no dynamism, and sucks the energy from the E Street Band. Though that shouldn’t hide the fact the songs are very poor. He admitted that the public never liked him singing ‘happy songs’ so why he went back to it for this album is anyone’s guess.
Life Itself is excellent though, and The Wrestler.

While we're on the subject of more-recent Springsteen albums... I'm probably in the minority but I still put Wrecking Ball in my all-time top-5 favorite Boss albums. Lots of great, honest tunes, the production is fantastic, and you can hear the venom and vile spewing from his vocals. The album came out at a time when somebody needed to say it, and he said it.

When discussing post-Tom Joad phase, I think it’s probably his strongest album. Certainly his tightest. For me the peaks of The Rising beat Wrecking Ball but the latter is that bit more consistent and less weighed down by excess songs (always thought The Rising was 3-4 songs too long). What’s your favourite latter day Bruce song? Paradise from The Rising never fails to move me. That last verse in particular; ‘I search for the peace in your eyes/but they’re as empty as paradise’. Incredibly haunting and tragic tune.

What’s your favourite latter day Bruce song? For me it's got to be American Skin (41 Shots). But I also love Wrecking Ball, Jack Of All Trades, and Land Of Hopes And Dreams.
