Columbia is a blatant ripoff. I hate it when I read stuff like this. It gets me down on Oasis.

Its more than likely not a rip off. By now every possible chord sequence will have been played togther in some song somewhere in the world - just because they sound the same doesn't mean noels ripped it off

It's no big deal. Lots of songs feature riffs in that scale, some of them are bound to be similar.

i agree i kinda get bummed out when i hear stuff like this but it is interesting at least?
and to any naysayers who say "WELL THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY NOTES WHO SAY NOEL RIPPED IT OFF"
noel has more than likely heard this song especially seeing oasis' earlier influences included british house and shoegaze music

Who cares if he ripped it of, as long as he got away with it

While I will admit I can hear the similarities , "Columbia" is about a billion times better than that song, so I don't think it counts as "ripping off".

So wait....
you actually expect me to believe that Noel was sitting in shithouse Manchester, heard this on the radio....went out and bought the disc and listened to it over and over and ripped it and put his own vocal melody over the top?
Fuck off.
I bet you he has no idea that this shit even exists.

^^^^You know, I would really like to agree with you. But to say Noel has a slight history of ripping off other bands is probably the biggest understatement in popular music.

Noel was ahead of his time. He was sampling music way before anyone else.

Noel took a good riff out of a bad song and gave it a better life. He's a fuckin' humanitarian.

There is NO question, Noel directly ripped this song off.
The Riff is exactly the same, as well as the chord progression....it's just slowed down and played with guitars on DM.
Fucking Noel. Hahaa. Total thief....

I'm aware of - and really not offended by - Noel's rip-offs of songs, so I expected it to be obvious. After watching it, though, I really think it may just be an odd coincidence.
Then again, I thought I had heard all of Noel's lifted lines until about a month ago, when I heard the Real People's "Feel the Pain" with the lyrics "Don't go away / say that you'll stay / forever and a day." Couldn't believe I hadn't heard that one before.

Fuck off. I bet you he has no idea that this shit even exists. House music was massive in the late 80s and early 90s in Manchester, there's a high chance he will have heard it.

To all the people that think it's a mere coincidence, nah. I bet this tune will've been played in The Hacienda in Manchester, and it's well known that Noel used to be into acid house. It's only a riff anyway.

Wow, also i believe, that this is where Andy got his moves from! anyway, i can totaly believe that noel heard this way back in the early 90s and recognised the potential, and to be honest, it take a genius to hear the potential of this crap. so what if he ripped it off? columbia is brilliant

Oh, and while we're at it; The verse of "Falling Down" has the same chord structure as Eiffel 69's "I'm Blue (Da Dam Dee Da Dam Bah)"

Columbia is a blatant ripoff. I hate it when I read stuff like this. It gets me down on Oasis. If Columbia was the only song Oasis had ever written i would have not ever been interested in the band at all. These are not the songs that made oasis, theee oasis, in my opinion, so i dont mind. If there would be a same kinda thing with dlbia or liveforever, then i would be quite upset. and i kinda like the "sampling" aspect of noels music writing, a little influence from hip-hop, after all they always were from the streets, like the thugs they are. i think noel used to go to some raves or some techno-parties as it is stated in this thread earlier. he easily might have heard it, and it is highly possible also that it came to him unconsciously while playing the guitar and him not really acknowledging that he was ripping it off from something he had heard before while on acid. that´s my belief. im a creative musician so i think i have some perspective on how our minds and brains work.
