Your best bet to make it in one piece to GMU from a bar are places in downtown Fairfax like TT Reynolds. It's a bar/music joint, but the only one I know of its kind around there. There are a few other restaurant-type places, but you are in suburbia here --- complete with chain restaurants, TJ Maxxes, shopping malls and everything is miles away from each other.
So, there's not much near the campus, that I can recall. Most of the GMU kids used to hoof it into DC.
Afterwards, late night, there's all-night places like Amphora that are good for a 3am coffee.
If you went 10-15+ miles away from GMU and more towards DC, you'd find things in Falls Church, Alexandria, Arlington, that are at least in the state.
But, unfortunately, I can't really recommend anywhere except TT Reynolds, which means it'll be completely mobbed because everyone around here KNOWS that's the only place to potentially go.

bad news mate, about TT Reynolds
it's history, the building was sold out from underneath the bars current owners, officially closed in July, my band used to play there regularly from 2007 until it closed, it was a sad day for northern virginia bars
but the are a few other drinking holes in "downtown" Fairfax City
Auld Shebeens The Firehouse Grill
and over on the other side of campus at University Mall is a bar called Fat Tuesdays
i'd recommend Fat Tuesday's now that TT's is history, they actually have New Orleans Abita beer on draft
i might be down for a drink at Fat's before the show
anyone else?

I was gonna recommend Auld Shebeens. I often go there to watch the EPL football games. I guess any place is fine with me.

I'm gonna do some more research/see what the people going with me are willing to do
Fat Tuesdays can be really corporate depending on location, I like me some hole in the wall bars

there aren't many hole in the wall bars in Fairfax County,
if they are hole in the wall... they're usually a bit redneck, like Patriots Cafe on Route 50/Lee Highway, they were kinda rude to me, maybe because i'm not a regular? no offense to anyone who drinks there regularly!
i didn't know Fat Tuesday's was a chain, makes sense tho, but since it's one of Masons main college bars, it's a bit run-down, its not like drinking at Applebee's or something
Firehouse Grill is independent, i know the owner, my bands played there too :-) plus at least its in the town! not in a strip mall
everyone has their own favorite types of bars, i usually like hole in the wall places that are friendly to everyone, not just regulars, TT's was that place :-( RIP

Sorry to hear about TT closing and spreading bad information. I'm up in Reston now and haven't been down in Fairfax for a year or so. It was the only one I knew of, and now....well, the options seem to be few and far between. I'll probably just brownbag it in the parking lot.

Greetings: can one tailgate in the parking lot at Mason? I know that at Merriweather and Nissan you can (sort of), sucks that the PC is not anywhere near a bar in walking distance. Does anyone know if they is a bar at University Mall on Braddock Road?

hello there
yep, it's on the back side of the mall out of sight, called Fat Tuesdays, i've done some research, it's not part of the chain called Fat Tuesdays, its privately owned, and you can definitely walk from there to Patriot Center
i think my group is going to be catching drinks there up till about 7 or so
see you there?
drinking on campus in the parking lot? keep it out of sight if you are! the campus police there can be nazi's from what i hear

I'm probably headed to DC before and after the gig. After 4 years of school in DC and 3 years traveling back and forth for visits, I just can't abide NoVa.

After some research and discussions with friends Fat Tuesday's looks pretty close to the Patriot Center and the best option in the area. I'll probably be there between 6 and seven with about 10 people I'm going with. If you have the sack to show here's how you'll recognize me - I'll be ultra hammered and better looking than you.

I'm staying at the Fairfax Hampton Inn, but was thinking it would be best to take a cab from there to the concert and back. Fat Tuesdays sounds like a good place to start/end the concert.
Easy to get a cab from there?
