This song has fast become my favourite on the album. There was a thread started a few months ago about which song you were most looking forward to hearing. I went with this in there (for reasons I'm not sure of ) but on first listening it wasnt as instant as the likes of Bag It Up, The Turning or I'm Outta Time. But it gets better with every listen. And the alternate version has made me appreciate it even more - although I do prefer the album version. Anyway, the point of this thread is what meaning do people take from this song? I had it down as a straightforward love song to begin with but given the imagery conveyed throughout the album and the lyrics in The Turning, "when the rapture takes me, be the fallen angel by my side", preceeding this track, my view on the meaning has changed dramatically. I'm not usually one to look into songs too deeply but I've now come to imagine it as a song of temptation with a religious theme. It starts "I still don't know what I was waiting for A big love to fall down from the sky" with looking for love and therefore being vulnerable to temptation. Then, "She took my hand and picked me up off the floor She put an apple in my eye" Someone comes along and catches his eye. Theres almost even an Adam and Eve vibe about this line with "put an apple in my eye". I imagine this character to now be the devil or a 'serpent' of some description, come to take him to the 'dark side' if you will. The next verse tells the story of him being wooed by this 'devil' "She come up to me I can't remember what she said 'Cos I was in a trance and I forgot it all" He has been put in a trance, hypnotised by the serpent, and is being encouraged over out of his mind almost. "Banging on about all that revolution in her head She make her love seem so magical" He has been taken in by her and the temptation is too much. The chorus fits the theme "I said "I'm tired Come get me off the merry-go-round" I'm wired Come feed me And then bring me down" He has had enough and is given into the temptation, has taken the apple (Adam and Eve again), and is being brought down (to hell). The next chorus instead finishes "Well heaven must have sent ya To save me for the rapture" Now I'm not very well read up on what 'the rapture' is but I think its supposed to be the 2nd coming of Christ to take all His people to be with him and leave behind all others to rot on earth. I could be wrong there but again it fits the theme of the song, the devil being a fallen angel, who then is saving him until the time of the rapture so as to experience the torment of it. Then at the end of the song he pleads "pick my soul off the ground, bring me home (heaven) dont keep me down (left behind to experience the rapture)". Anybody else look at it this way?

Was sick of life in the fast lane and being on a constant high. He met Sarah and settled down with her. I thought this was pretty obvious?

Its an amazing song. One of Noel's best ever IMO.
Good analysis man. True or not, it makes sense.

Nah, I'd suggest that that lyric is more likely derived from the phrase 'apple of my eye', meaning someone that you cherish, or adore.

It's about Adam and Eve and how Eve tempted Adam into eating the apple off the forbidden tree..."She put an apple in my eye..."

And you'll never ever convince me that it's about Adam & Eve. ;D

And you'll never ever convince me that it's about Adam & Eve. ;D cause there are no biblical references in the song...

Well, the words 'heaven' and 'rapture' do not really constitute enough evidence to theorize that an entire song is a reference to Adam and fooking Eve, least not when it also contains personal, self-referential lyrics, and when there are direct quotes from Noel Gallagher himself regarding the song's intended meaning.

I got the whole apple of my eye play on words, people always get sayings and jumble them up in songs, that's basicly what he did. I don't really think Noel is the kinda guy who sits at home and just thinks of biblical references to use in his songs, but nice interpritation.

Sounds right to me, considering Noel is dyslexic and mixed up phrases before (Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, anyone?).

Good song but think they should have put the alternate version on the album, the one off the bonus disc.

Hello, I have problem with last words of the lyrics. What Noel singing? Waiting For The Rapture I still don't know what I was waiting for A big love to fall down from the sky? She took my hand and picked me up off the floor She put an apple in my eye I said I'm tired Come get me off the merry-go-round I'm wired Come feed me and then bring me down She come up to me I can't remember what she said I was in a trance and I forgot it all Banging on about all that Revolution in her head She making love seem so magical She said I'm tired Come get me off the merry-go-round I'm wired And heaven must of sent you To save me for the rapture...yeah...away Oooooh I'm tired Come get me off the merry-go-round I'm wired Come feed me and then bring me down In my soul on the ground ...
