I orignally had it between Coldplay's VLV and Oasis' DOYS. But because we're biased (still are, for that matter, actually lol) I changed it. Plus, you can now include other bands too in your thinking. But lets be honest, it's going to come down between Viva La Vida and Dig Out Your Soul.
Lets honest again, the media loves Coldplay and hates Oasis.
I don't know which way it's going to go. But, if we're judging on music and leaving Coldplay's media darling and Oasis' bad boy images behind, then Oasis will easily get the award. If Coldplay wins, I truly feel that it's rigged and not being judged by the album but by their reputation.
Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE Coldplay, I've just been disappointed with them since 2002. VLV has some great tracks (Cemeteries of London, Lost, and the first half of Death and All His Friends). But, as I said at the time, Coldplay tried to be "too smart" and paid for it - the double track nonsense ruined the album. For example, Death and All His Friends could have been song of the year, but can't be considered for that now because the shit tagged on at the end. Now apply that to the album - the album had a chance to be the best of 2008, but again can't be because of the filler-aspect of the second half of most songs.
Oasis, on the other hand, have 7 really good tunes. And even the bad ones are better than Coldplays 42 - thats the worst song I heard, the lyrics are cringe worthy.
If the only criticism you can make of DOYS is that it has 4 filler tracks (but the other 7 are really good) then the boys are doing something right.
This doesn't have to be about Coldplay, so discuss whatever.
Mind you, Glasvegas gives Coldplay a run of its money.
My top 3 of 2008 so far 1.) Dig Out Your Soul - Oasis 2.) Glasvegas - Glasvegas 3.) Viva La Vida - Coldplay

No. I'm not defending Coldplay but Oasis haven't impressed me that much. Either Evergrey, AC/DC or Aeon Of Horus will be it for me

I am undecided. There are many great new albums out this year. But I don't really think it has a great chance. Maybe 35 per cent. I honestly don't even think that it'll make my album of the month

Fuck this is shit!
DOYS = best album of the year by some distance. I thought Only By The Night would be but Kings Of Leon let themselves down with that album! And Viva La Vida is crock of shite!
EDIT: "Forth" by The Verve is in contention and only that!
top 3
01. Dig Out Your Soul- Oasis 02. Forth- The Verve
03. Only By The Night- Kings Of Leon

For DOYS to be album of the year, it needs to have more of a cultural impact.

yeah with out question!i hope they sweep all the music award shows. people like you are sadly, sadly naive. oasis will never win a grammy. if they couldn't win for wonderwall, they won't win for this record, that's for damn sure. they always give 'em to the dixie chicks, john mayer and justin timberlake. oasis doesn't sell like those people do. that's just the way it is. furthermore, there are a lot of bands i can think of that never won a grammy (not counting those bullshit lifetime achievement awards). cream, pink floyd, the who, neil young, chuck berry, led zeppelin, queen, the band, the doors... shall i continue?

Album of the year for me is....... James - Hey Ma To be honest, the best album of 2008 is probably the new Kings of Leon album, which is simply stunning. But seeing as James never get a mention on here, im going for the new James album.

coldplay's going to win best song for viva la vida. i'm positive of that.
r.e.m., nas, lil wayne, and coldplay will be safe bets for the album of the year nomination.

News flash: there are actually other albums that have come out this year other than those of Coldplay and Oasis!
2008 will go down as a fucking great year of music. I know almost all of my favorite bands/artists have or will be releasing albums in the year.

I know almost all of my favorite bands/artists have or will be releasing albums in the year. Let's be honest, as far as the music press go, it's going to be between Coldplay, Oasis (and perhaps The Killers, but that's a long shot), with Glasvegas taking the award for "best new band" It's oh so predictable. And if Coldplay win, it's not on the merit of their album but on the fact that they are the media's darling. The only think Viva La Vida deserves to win is the award for most disappointing album of the year; what a crock of shit.

I've heard the Killers album is shit.
Off the top of my head, some of the great albums so far:
Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul Paul Weller - 22 Dreams Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns The Roots - Rising Down Travis - Ode To J. Smith Muse - HARRP (perhaps live's don't count) The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed Nas - Untitled Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night British Sea Power - Do Yo Like Rock Music? B.B. King - One Kind Favor Coldplay - Viva La Vida Sigur Rós - Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III Albert Hammond Jr - Como Te Llama?
I admit, I haven't gotten much of a chance to explore other stuff this year, as pretty much all of my long list of favorite bands and artists released new material or will this year. So those have taken up most all of my listening. The list so far is a bit more "commercial than usual" But every year I compile a list of ranked albums, perhaps I'll post it on here this time aorund.
