Ok, first off, yes I love the Beatles - not only were they instrumental in the music scene even today, but they produced some of the best music of any generation. But I do think they are over hyped at times - mainly cause people to overlook other good bands (such as the ones listed in this poll). In fact, I hardly ever listen to The Beatles....Plus, if I had the Beatles there, it would off set the poll - I'm only interested in people's opinions of these 4 bands
I picked the above 4 because 3 of them are in my top 5 fav bands (Oasis....Smiths, Stone Roses, Tom Petty), and 3 of them greatly influnced Noel (Smiths, Stone Roses, Kinks).
Again, I can't really decide, but if push came to shove:
1.) The Smiths - Most of the time depressing lyrics, but very clever and witty. Great vocals (after getting used to the Opera-style vox). Very catchy melodies, and fantastic guitar work. So many good songs, it's ridiculous.
Boy With the Thorn in His Side, Cemetery Gates, Point a Vulgar Picture, Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before, I Started Something I Couldnt Finish, What She Said, Reel Around the Future, How Soon Is Now.....the list is literally endless
2.) The Stone Roses - At times I do prefer them over The Smiths because they are upbeat, great for a night out....They have less songs than The Smiths, and have less 'weaker' songs, but even though there are more Smiths songs I dislike than the Roses, there are more I like of Smiths - mainly due to their huge collection.
Sally Cinnamon, Where Angels Play, Mersey Paradise, Elephant Stone, Waterfall, I'm the Resurrection, Made of Stone, Standing Here, How Do You Sleep, Ten Storey Love Song.....the list would be endless too if they only had more songs, fucking Garreth Evans, their manager.
3.) Tom Petty - Also at times supersedes both The Smiths and Stone Roses. Nice to see a yank in there, lol.....I have his greatest hits, and they really are great
Free Falling, American Girl, I Need to Know, Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That (incredible song), Even the Losers, Learning to Fly, Mary Jane's Last Dance....I highly advice you all to pick up his greatest hits, if you haven't done. --- 4.) The Kinks - Just downloaded their Ultimate Collection yesterday. I haven't listened to it much, but I'm surprised there's so many songs I know by them:
You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting for You, Set Me Free....can't believe I've heard all these but didn't know the artist until today......then add to the songs that I've just heard for the first time: Lola especially.....great band. ---
I have currently 3,499 songs on my Itunes consisting of many bands, but in all honesty I really only need 5 (Oasis, Smiths, Stone Roses, Tom Petty, Beatles....maybe The Kinks, we'll see....)
I'll reserve voting for now. They're all just fucking monumental in their own right.

it's a tie at #1 between the kinks and tom petty. i put tom petty down on that poll for "you don't know how it feels" and "mary jane's last dance" alone. man, that guy could write!
the kinks are tied for 1st for "something else by the kinks." nobody could write a better pop song than ray davies, except maybe pete townshend, holland/dozier/holland and lennon/mccartney.

Judging by singles alone, Tom Petty wins by a landslide. But The Stone Roses were much more consistent, although they had just a limited number of songs.

Wow. I'd have to say the Stone Roses. That debut album is incredibly special to me and in my opinion is the only debut that could top Definitely Maybe. It's also the first vinyl record I ever bought. No Stone Roses = no Oasis, even though you could argue that with The Smiths and The Kinks as well.
But The Smiths and The Kinks are also two of my favourites, the latter being one of the most underrated bands of all time. I've discussed The Smiths before at length so I don't think there's much more to be said.
The Kinks should be far more popular than they are and Ray Davies is one of the great songwriters. I think one of the reasons they weren't as popular as The Beatles and the Stones, particularly in the early sixties is that they had more of a blues-rock sound than The Beatles' more poppy sound (which won over the female contingent) and didn't have a frontman like Mick Jagger (always a tough ask). But they have an astonishing back catalogue, especially in the mid 60s to early 70s. Even as early as 'You Really Got Me' they were innovating (I think this was the first song to use heavy guitar distortion). I prefer them to The Who at the moment.
They were also a support band for the Beatles. What an amazing night that would be. Imagine being able to say that you saw The Kinks and The Beatles within the space of a couple of hours.
Never really been a fan of Tom Petty.
1. The Stone Roses 2. The Smiths 3. The Kinks

Tom Petty has no place here, up against greats like The Kinks, The Smiths, and The Stone Roses, imo.
The Stone Roses prevail for me. Then it would be..
The Smiths, then The Kinks, and then Tom Petty.

Thats funny because Petty is the only one I like of the four. I respect the Kinks and The Smiths but besides a few songs they arent my cup of tea. The Stone Roses I dont get at all. I bought the debut album because it seems like most Oasis fans love them and they were influential to Noel and Liam but maybe I had to be there or be British.

That's quite surprising as these three bands are some of Noel's biggest influences as a writer. I understand that sometimes a band just doesn't 'click' as others might expect though.

I like Meat is Murder more than Queen is Dead. I can understand as a fellow American about the Roses, but for me that debut album is very atmospheric. Alot of people like to slash off on Ian's voice and that he can't sing, but the vocals were never the center point of their tunes, it was Squire's guitar and Reni's drumming. Ian and Reni's vocals added an accent to the atmospheric they built with each song. Everytime I listen to Waterfall it's like a serene roller coaster ride, where everything has its epic highs and sweeping lows (good lows) yet you feel no pump up, just caught in the moment adrift between space and time (at least that's how I feel). With Second Coming, alot of people dismiss it because of some of the crappy tunes penned by Ian like Daybreak and Straight to the Man, and Begging You (even though Squire has credits on that as well), Squire's guitar literally steals the show throughout the whole album. Tears, Love Spreads, Breaking into Heaven, Driving South, Good Times, etc. are absolute blasts to listen to.

1. The Kinks.
I find myself listening to this one the most, out of these 4 bands. Incredibly underrated band.
2 would be The Smiths for me. Love them too, but not everything.
3. Stone Roses. Just because they don't have that many songs, but most of the ones they do have are great.
4. Tom Petty. He's great, but I don't actually know a lot of his stuff. But the songs I do know are great.
