After many hours I spend on listening to Dig Out Your Soul, I think I have a clear opinion.
As other big bands such as Beatles, Rolling Stones and more, Oasis are making a bit different album. It was a shit if they were making the same tunes every album and that's why I think they got it right. The first 3 album are Britpop great Guitar-riffs rock, SOTSOG is a half soft rock half psychedelic rock, Heathen Chemistry are classic rock songs with a touch of pop-rock ("she is love" for example), Don't believe the truth is a Rock album, 4 brilliant musicians who had grown and become mature and done a great rock album. Dig Out Your Soul is a groove rock album. It has great drumming and great bass-lines. It shouldn't sound like Morning glory!
I think the album could have been better- the 3 last songs are the worst songs in the album. Ain't Got Nothin' is a nice tune, but it can be a B-side. Andy's song is great but could be a rockin' B-side as well, and Soldier On is a fine tune, but not more than it. If they had replaced those 3 songs with 3 Oasis-y songs (that one was a hit as TSOTL and others songs like the first and second tracks) it would have been better album but they probably didn't have any 3 songs like it.... But what about Stop The Clocks?!? and an electric version of "Record Machine" could have fit too.
The album is missing some more guitar solos and guitar parts as well as highlight and more choruses.
The first part of the album (till track 7) is great. The second part is good but no more than it. I think it should get 7 out of 10, which is very good, but could have been 9 out of 10 with some more guitar solos for example.

hmmm, well, 70% you say then? That's fine I guess since 70% at school is a distinction (as in pretty fucking good) so I guess that's what they were aiming for!
I agree about Record machine though, although Noel says in the doc he has so many other songs, so I guess maybe he's saving up some of his best for a solo album or something.

fuck stc and rm. you guys have made me hate just hearing about them the way you talk about those two songs. they aren't there, and the album doesn't need those bland songs.

Listen up, 70% is really good. I'm just saying the album could have been better. I have no complains, tough. making an album is hard work and 7/10 is real good, it just not a revolutionary album. That's it.
Very good album. loved it.
and for Stop the clocks and Record Machine - I just mentioned them as an example of songs who could made this album better. I think the album could have get 9/10 if he had one more hit song and had more high points.
cheers

Lets be honest though, this record has been called Oasis's 'change of direction' album, by removing those last 3 songs you turn it into yet another 'predictable' Oasis album. The album is all about not being 'oasisy' as you put it and those last 3 songs typify that more than any. A mate out of work here, a huge Floyd fan and loves his prog rock hyped 'Soldier On' more than any track on the album.
