It's probably so that it could match the key of Liam's voice.

It's probably so that it could match the key of Liam's voice. A capo is not necessary on a bass, and what you said doesnt make sense, A capo doesnt change the tuning of a guitar. Its really just what I said, Its Andy being a very very lazy bassit. He doesnt want to move his hand as much on the fret board, thats what it is.

He did it on plenty of other songs before, so it's no surprise.

He always did it on Turn Up The Sun. You get a fatter tone when playing an open string. Since TSOTL is in the key of B, it makes perfect sense. Especially since he is now playing a Fender-like P-Bass, the tone is much sharper and has more attack than his Burns bass that muddled out tone for days.

Nothing wrong with using a capo. Kasabian's bassist does the same thing on Empire. It makes an otherwise difficult bassline much, much easier.

TSOTL is not a hard bass line to play, Andy just doesnt want to move his hand around much. To say TSOTL is a difficult bassline is absurd, it is if your a beginner, but otherwise its cake

From listening to the live one (which I am as I write this) it sounds/looks like he's playing the 2nd fret B on the A string and then a high B on maybe the D string to make it sounds cool or something I dunno
But I highly doubt that it's just so he doesnt have to put his finger on a fret

It's really weird when you think that Gem and Andy have been in the band for 8 years. As for the capo, maybe Andy played guitar on the album version and so uses it as a kind of reminder that he's in B not A you know? Coz we know they dont stick to their own instruments in the studio anymore

I use a capo sometimes too for several reasons.
1. You can use hammer-ons and pull-offs in the high notes and easliy return to an open string.
2. The sound; like someone else mentioned, you get a fatter tone when playing an open string.
3. I have a bad wrist, the capo makes playing some tunes easier on the wrist action.

I use a capo sometimes. If you don't need to use the other frets in the song then you might as well.
