I know I am beating a dead horse here, but I think we can compare these two albums in an interesting way since they are similarily set up. So here goes. I will try to mix and match my feelings with the general consensus.
The First Single:
The Hindu Times vs Lyla
I think most people prefer The Hindu Times and I myself would think I would, since I love their heavier stuff better than their pop stuff (for example Morning Glory > than Roll With It and My Sister Lover > than Stay Young). But something about HT does not quite do it for me and Lyla is so catchy, really brightens the mood.
The Verdict: Tie
Noel's Shit Song At #2:
Force Of Nature vs Mucky Fingers
Ugh. Not really a fan of either. They can sound good if you are really in the mood for them but I feel both songs can be forgotten. Force of Nature isn't the worst though and would be cool if Liam sang it.
The Verdict: Force Of Nature (HC)
Noel's Ballad:
Little By Little vs The Importance Of Being Idle An interesting battle, as there are many fans of both. Personally I do not feel LBL is that great and is quite overrated while TIOBI is I feel Noel's greatest sung song effort on an LP since Don't Look Back In Anger.
The Verdict: The Importance Of Being Idle (DBTT)
Liam's Ballad:
Songbird vs Love Like A Bomb
Many say LLAB is an extention of Songbird. It makes sense and both songs are great, but we can't deny that though Songbird is simple, it is just beautiful. Nothing wrong with simplicity if done right.
The Verdict: Songbird (HC)
The Champagne Supernova Like Legendary Ballad:
Stop Crying Your Heart Out vs Let There Be Love
Both are great songs, very beautiful. But let's face it. SCYHO may have saved Oasis around the early 21st century, and its inclusion in the Butterfly Effect was vital for bandwagon ballad type fans (fans who like songs like Wonderwall, Stairway to Heaven and Good Riddance but know didly shit about anything else the band does. Face it, those types of fans make albums sell and bands popular) to get back into Oasis for the first time since Wonderwall. Pretty easy decision here, not to take anything from LTBL.
The Verdict: Stop Crying Your Heart Out (HC)
Filler, Filler, Filler:
A Quick Peep vs The Meaning Of Soul:
I actually think AQP is pretty cool and would love to play that on guitar hero. But the thing is, it does not belong in the middle of an album. If you wanted an instrumental, add at least 2 minutes and make it the first song. MOS has to grow on everyone, and is not terrible but its nothing to write home about. I want this one to be a tie but AQP's placement was so unnecessary and did not help HC's cause.
The Verdict: The Meaning Of Soul (DBTT)
A Slow Cry:
Born On A Different Cloud vs Keep The Dream Alive
These are the songs you either love or you hate. Well I like both, and I already know I prefer BOADC by a fair margin. But I know the consensus does not. So.
The Verdict: Tie
Noel's Other Sung Song On The Album:
She Is Love vs Part Of The Queue
Well. As catchy as SIL is, it is also as crappy. I remember someone mentioning it was a piss poor effort to try and rival Liam's Songbird, which is very true. POTQ is rarely mentioned by others, but is obviously the better song.
The Verdict: Part Of The Queue (DBTT)
Here Comes Liam Again:
Better Man vs Guess God Thinks I'm Abel
I don't hate Better Man, but man, there are better tunes than that one. And its placement at the end of the album is terrible, it leaves you with a bland taste in your mouth. I always feel tired after that song, making me feel like all of HC put me to sleep. GGTIA is a pretty fair effort by Liam, though I wonder if it kept The Boy With The Blues off the album, which could be critical.
The Verdict: Guess God Thinks I'm Abel (DBTT)
Gem's Gems:
Hung In a Bad Place vs A Bell Will Ring
Well we can't quite call them gems, even if they belong to Gem. There doesn't seem to be a strong general liking for HIABP but more of a consistant "meh" for it. ABWR is different. Seems some love it and some can't stand it at all, must be the "entertain your goals" line. Seems even to me. I like ABWR far better but...
The Verdict: Tie
The Two Remaining That Don't Quite Compare:
Turn Up The Sun vs (Probably) All In The Mind
Some people really hate TUTS. I don't know why at all. One's a pretty rockin tune while one is silly sounding filler. This really is no contest at all.
The Verdict: Turn Up The Sun (DBTT)
In the end we have come up with a 5-3-3 edge for Don't Believe The Truth. Many may argue that if you break the ties, Heathen Chemistry could win. True. But for me, Lyla, Born On A Different Cloud and A Bell Will Ring would break the ties, which would give DBTT a 7-4 decision, which is definately how I rate and compare both albums. But I tried being the concensus and that is what I came up with. What do you think?

DBTT is miles more interesting, if a little dry on the first few listens, i think it really grows on you.

No contest, HC is a messy, poorly produced piece of crap. DBTT isn't.

Interesting, so I won't flame. I like HC, but DBTT is far better.

More of the same from me I'm afraid. HC is great. DBTT is even better.

DBTT is miles more interesting, if a little dry on the first few listens, i think it really grows on you. Completely agree. I wasn't exactly sure what I felt about it the first time I listened to it (although I immediately liked it just because it was Oasis and they were trying new stuff), but I love, love, LOVE the unprecedented versatility and balance of the album. Amazing stuff and a new standard IMHO. In fact, as per the above song v. song comparisons, the only song on HC I'd take over DBTT is SCYHO over LTBL (which was hard for me to ever fully embrace after hearing It's a Crime a million plus times). I think the thing I find the strangest (and I guess this just falls in the category of I like Oasis' experimentation where some people just wish they could go back to the DM/WTSMG sound) is why people dislike Mucky Fingers so much. Personally, I think it's the best track on the album right after TIOBI, and Noel agrees with me. It's tied for most unique track on the album and is my favorite no. 2 Oasis track along with My Big Mouth. Also, don't see how Songbird gets the nod over Love Like a Bomb. LLAB is a like a much more rich, immensely textured version of Songbird, and I think, "Am I reaching the place that I want deep inside/Girl I need it/And you hold the key to the shrine" is Liam's best set of lyrics so far. Also, I think KTDA is way better than BOADC and tops TUTS as Andy's best DBTT song. I just feel the track musically is so subtly rich and the lyrics are among Oasis' best. I also feel it is one of the few tracks that somewhat recaptures Oasis' 'cool Britannia' '95 vibe without sacrificing the progression in their music. One of my top four tracks on DBTT. Anyways, end of rant...for now ;-)

And people say I need a girlfriend? So much for the hatred of long posts on here.... She wrote it. Superb comeback ;D DBTT is my favourite album so I'm gonna sway that way. I think every song is a stomper, Let There Be Love it my favourite though it could do with being made a bit more epic. If you think Mucky Fingers AND Force of Nature are shit. I'm sure this live version of the latter will swing you. Sounds much better than the original.

I reckon the high points on HC are higher than those on DBTT, but DBTT is a more consistent and listenable album overall.

DBTT is a much more consistent, sturdy album, even if it only has a single classic track (TIOBL). Heathen Chemistry has a lot of outright stinkers on it and the stale production doesn't help.
