I was just listening to Noel and Gem's semi-acoustic set in Paris from 2006. Before Noel starts "Whatever" he talks about how the song wasn't well-received in most of the world besides France and Japan. Is that true? Did it not do well in the UK and did people not enjoy it? I would have thought "Whatever" would have made music fans go mad because they would realize Oasis weren't a flash in the pan after DM. Anyway I know it's an odd question but I absolutely love that song, so uplifting and the strings just carry it along. It's just Noel gives the impression most people think it's "shit" in his own words.

Well, I think it was pretty well received in the UK. I remember it was challenging for xmas number 1 here and eventually charted at number 3.
I also believe I've read somewhere that it spent longer in the UK singles charts than any other Oasis single. The B-Sides were amazing, Half The World Away, (It's Good) To Be Free and Slide Away

How Sweet it is To be an Idiot - yup, Neil knows alright for he is an idiot if he thinks these 2 songs sound alike theres only 1 very small segment of it that sounds close, but even that's pushing it. Neil is a c-u-n-t. If it wasn't for his idiocracy, Whatever would have been placed on an album, as well as Stop The Clocks, and would have helped Oasis generate even more success. Whatever! - It remains another hidden gem in the Oasis collection.

Releasing it between albums to stir the pot was a very smart move in my opinion and it definitely generated plenty of hype and success without being an album track. I would like you to explain the benefit of putting it on either DM or MG and how it would have effected the bands success.

Before Noel starts "Whatever" he talks about how the song wasn't well-received in most of the world besides France and Japan. I always thought that was a weird comment to make. it got to number three for God's sake! And it was before Oasis had made it really big in the tabloids being on the covers every day, they were still a bit 'under the radar' at that point. And crap conquers all at Xmas anyway - Mr. Blobby and novelty poo is always no.1. I love Whatever and always assumed most other fans did too. My favourite version is the Jools Holland late-1994 version with the proper live orchestra (they also did a magnificent I Am The Walus and the Sad Song version on the DM DVD on that show), some wonderful added Noel guitar lines different from the studio version. nl.youtube.com/watch?v=zExVyXXnUNw
