he didn't intentionally made his voice like that, but that's what happens when you smoke, drink and take drugs too much. he lost it. I love when fans say he did it all on purpose. Yea he purposely wants to sound like Kermit the frog half the time... Like you said, it's simple...You do alot of drugs, you smoke alot of cigarettes and you drink alot = ruining your voice. Funny it probably made Steven Tyler's voice even better

I don't think we should have our mind made up 100% about Liams voice right now. Not until we hear him sing this autumn. If it sounds worse, then we can be 99.9% sure that his voice is indeed ruined, if it sounds better than DBTT tour, then we can rest assured. Oasis played at the Brit Awards last year. His voice sounded a bit clearer than some of his previous performances but he was still struggling to hold the notes. And that was with well over a year's rest, so he's going to sound like Kermit again by the end of the next tour.

well i personally thought he sounded good at the brits.he may choose not to carry the notes anymore for a different effect.yeh hes partied hard but for the last 6 years hes calmed down alot so i wouldnt go blaming his substance abuse too much, his voice was strained on the be here now tour, buut it didnt totally wreck his vocals,it seems at the minute that he is doing alot of the raspy vocals purposely.hes just gotta learn to get it right in the live mix.listen to the new demos, you can clearly tell hes puttin some of it on.yeh he cant carry his notes aswell but nasal vocal is down to him

I don't think he sounds that bad. Not terrible, not amazing. Just average.
That, on the other hand, is a great vocal.

But his performance of Rock N Roll Star isn't bad at ALL! That's why im confused and this thread exists....how can his voice be shit 1 min, but not the next? I think there's more to it then cigs and alc Either way, the band have gotten better musically over the years...musically, this is one of my fav performances of RNRS

Bar the first line of this song, I think the style really suits Rock and Roll star at the Brits. See for yourself. Morning Glory on the other hand...

Ultimately I think Liam's only capable of singing the lower stuff nowadays (i.e. Wonderwall, Songbird, even Rock n Roll Star) whereas tracks he used to do with so much ease all those years ago (like Morning Glory) he just can't reach without really straining his voice.
Safest bet for him is to sing more n shout less.

I think a big part of the problem is that Liam has always sung really loud.
Ian McCulloch commented on it when Liam did backing vox on Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Nothing Lasts Forever' way back in 97.
More recently, Death In Vegas said the same thing when he recorded 'Scorpio Rising' with them.
Liam has never sung softly, he's always shouted.
It's just that now, years down the line with the added effects of all those ciggies, his vocal chords aren't what they once were and he struggles for breath.
His comments recently (in Mojo) about hating his vocals from Definitely Maybe ('I sounded like tweety pie) were ridiculous.
His voice then was unique and incredible. Now's it's a strange rasp and, yes, he can occasionally sound like Kermit.

He did do it intentionally.
Def Maybe demos: Immaculate voice, but he 'DEVELOPED' pretty fast for Def Maybe. What does that mean? He strained it to make it more aggressive, but nobody noticed from the singing cos his voice was soooooooo so so great, but when he talked you could hear his throat was begging for a break. One example is 'I am the Walrus' live from radio 1 i think, liam says 'Thank you, thank you all for buying the album' and his voice sounds like shit, but the minute he starts, well, shouting the song he sounds amazing. So, it started clean, then not so clean in MG (started to push the end of the words more and more), then perfect amount for BHN, then its a bit over the top for SOTSOG (come on, remember that first listen to go let it out??), then awful for HC then worse for DBTT and now he can't go back. Of course now the HC voice sounds better when you compare it to DBTT but after next tour, the DBTT voice will sound much better in comparison to this tours voice. All of which is a damn shame, having a voice like that and burn it so fast. ok, no would-have's, but still.... F*ck

When Noel took over the vocal duty for "You and I are gonna Live Forever" was that because Liam couldn't reach it anymore, or was it just for effect? His voice would've had to deteriorate pretty rapidly, considering in '93 and even early '94 Liam seemed to sing that part with relative ease, yet Noel started singing it from late '94 onwards.

So those of you who think he's doing it deliberately - by the same token, he could go back to singing as he did in 94-97 if he wanted to, could he?
No, he couldn't. He has fucked his voice with fags, booze and shouting. Some songs we will never hear live again unless Noel sings them. Sad but true.
