Don't forget the secret weddings too So yeah I totally agree, it's not about who's better, it's about having a consistent line up appealing to the people who usually go to this kind of festival Noel would look totally out of place lined up with Jay Z, 50 Cent and that kind of people...

Really don't get the big hoo-ha about this. Most people who are moaning about it aren't even going, so why are they bothered? You're not duty bound to go see him anyway, there's plenty of other things to do at Glastonbury ( ) Good thing is the rest of us can get on with enjoying the festival this year without the posers.

look the point is not whether or not JayZ is any good (He isn't) but why he would be headlining a festival that has always had ROCK AND ROLL in the past. That is why Noel is outraged, and he is justified in this.

why he would be headlining a festival that has always had ROCK AND ROLL in the past. No it hasn't. Apart from acts like Moby and Fatboy Slim who don't fall too easily into the rock category, a black solo artist has headlined before - Youssou N'Dour sometime in the early 90s. De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Isaac Hayes, Jimmy Cliff, Black Eyed Peas, James Brown are acts I can think of off the top of my head who have played the Pyramid Stage. Have a look somewhere that lists past line-ups, not exactly all rock and roll by any stretch.

It seems like there's more bad news in store for Jay-Z.
Fresh from the less than enthusiastic response to his headline spot at Glastonbury, it looks as though fans are also deserting the Wireless festival in favour of the small-time Camden Crawl.
The rapper, who has been blamed by critics including Noel Gallagher for the slow uptake of tickets for Somerset festival, is headlining the Hyde Park event in July.
But according to Seatwave.com, tickets for the Camden Crawl - a two-day indie 'gig crawl' - are apparently selling for twice the price of the O2-sponsored event in Hyde Park.
The Crawl, which last year saw surprise performances by Amy Winehouse and Babyshambles, has experienced a surge in ticket prices, with fans paying an average of £93.55 on the website.
"In 2008 we've seen a rise in demand for the smaller, niche festivals with fans choosing to see smaller, up-and-coming bands rather than big, well known acts," said Joe Cohen, who runs seatwave.com.
"With surprise appearances from Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse last year Camden Crawl always has a trick up its sleeve and fans are now desperate to get in on the act."

I bow to your greater knowledge.

While I do not consider myself a Jay-Z fan in the slightest, it's not called the "Glastonbury Rock and Roll Festival". It's called the "Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts". While I would much rather see rock and roll, there is no argument that hip hop/rap is a contemporary form of music. Obviously, the organizers think that it's a good thing to try something like this. To say that Jay-Z shouldnt be playing because Glasto is a "rock and roll festival" is outright bullshit. It's not a rock festival even if thats what its primarily known for. It's a music festival. It still sold out, so its hardly a failure.

Fair point, maybe getting Jay-Z to play is a good idea as it is a change from the usual - BUT I still think that putting him in a headline slot is a bad call. The headliners should be either a) the biggest/most popular band around (Killers, Arctic Monkeys etc) or b) a classic band (the Who, Paul McCartney). Jay-Z just isn't popular enough over here. And as for the ticket sales being bad - yes it has now sold out, but the fact that they took so long to do so in comparison does make it a bit of a failure. From 2 hours year-in year-out to 2 days.

It's a rock festival, doesn't matter if it's not called that in the name, and a hiphop rap guy shouldn't be headlining it.

It's a rock festival, doesn't matter if it's not called that in the name, and a hiphop rap guy shouldn't be headlining it. Noel is an idiot in this regard. He's not infallible. It's neither his, nor your choice who headlines Glastonbury. If you dont like the headliners, you dont go and plenty of people have made that choice, but it still sold out. There's plenty of other acts that can be seen and Jay-Z can be avoided. I don't think Noel is jealous, nor is he racist. I think he's just hard headed and set in his ways. He can state his opinion, but regardless if we love his music we're not mandated to agree with it. The fact of the matter is that its NOT a rock festival only, thats the great thing about Glastonbury. It's only been that in regards to the headliners in the past and its nice to Glastonbury break from that unspoken tradition IMO. I give Eavis credit for attempting something new with the Saturday headliner. I wouldnt of chosen Jay-Z as I don't consider myself a fan of his, but more power to him. I'd rather see some diversity than the same rock/indie bands swapping headlining slots every couple of years.

I think that would definitively end this discussion, and it would shut up those "progressive" thinkers who say Jay-Z is going to be a huge success.
I think the ticket sales are a pretty good indicator of how successful his performance will be.

It would be a bit sad if people who didn't like Jay Z watched him just to bottle him rather than going to see one of the other acts.

I like Jay-z and respect him as a hip hop artist. However i never felt that hip hop was any good at large-scale live shows.

Noel, You suck big time!! Who are you to insult U2, The Rolling Stones, and now Jay-Z. Jay-Z is more of a lyricist than you will ever be. How long have you been making music. How many albums have you sold? Each of these groups, including Jay-Z, have been around making music longer than your cornball ass. You have not even begun to pay the dues these people have paid. Don't be upset because they have enjoyed more success than you, and even in your own country. Oops I forgot you don't like the British either. Crawl back in your hole or get your ass kicked by your brother again. Also, what contributions have you made to society besides writing songs? Have you ever heard of giving back to society? These guys sure have. PLEASE STOP comparing yourself to John Lennon and The Beatles! You'll never be that big. Keep your comments to yourself because no one cares. Jay-Z is still laughing at your dumb ass...all the way to the bank...I hope Blur sells more albums than you... Wake up call...You are not even on the same playing field as The Beatles.. and the USA does not want to see you perform here again, maybe we should Lenny Kravitz over to show you how to play the guitar and how to sing you dumb shit... Signed, Proud to be a Jay-Z fan :-/ >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( Nice to see Hova fans infiltrating our site...and making us BIGGER than we already are by registering HAHAHA!!! Don't know bout Lenny Kravitz isn't he in jail or something?

Noel is entitled to opinion, as is everyone.
I like Jay-Z, and he is right for Glastonbury.
Glastonbury is majorly indie/rock bands but its diverse.
Thats why its Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts.

anyone that goes to glastonbury based only on the 3 headline acts on the pyramid stage is going to the wrong festival.
