Hip-Hop Connection editor Andy Cowan has described Oasis star Noel Gallagher as a "has-been". He hit back at comments Gallagher made about the arrival of hip-hop music at Glastonbury Festival being "wrong", describing the rocker's views as "reactionary".
The guitarist suggested yesterday that Jay-Z's addition to the Glastonbury bill was the reason behind the lower number of ticket registrations for this year's event.
Cowan told the BBC: "These are the typical reactionary views of a pampered has-been.
"Having had the grave misfortune of seeing Oasis play Glastonbury in 1995 - a lumpen, turgid mess of a set - Gallagher himself has set the bar very low, and I've no doubt Jay-Z will be a huge success this year."
Festival organiser Emily Eavis also responded to the remarks, pointing out that urban acts including De La Soul, Cyprus Hill and The Roots had all played the summer bash before.
Glastonbury Festival takes place on June 27-79. The full lineup will be announced on May 1.

Didn't Jay-Z just marry Beyonce? If anything, I'll give him credit for hitting that every night.

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080415/ap_on_en_mu/jay_zThe AP picked it up, there's apparently some really negative blowback from the media... I especially dislike the parts that allege Noel with innate white conservatism (fancy media word for racism)

I like how Noel can't criticize with out being called (basically) racist.. I'm sure their are a ton of African Americans would do not like rock or Oasis but should they be labeled racist? No. Plus Glastonbury is mainly a guitar based festival. Yes their has been some rap artists in there but non have headlined. So the main bands (the ones who use guitars) should be the headliners not rap artists because that is not the festivals tradition. It would be like Oasis playing at the BET awards or something.

Yeah, this is just ridiculous. Noel is 100% right. They compare Jay-Z to groups like Tribe called Quest and the Roots which is just ridiculous. Jay-Z sings about how awesome he is, bling, pimpin, and hos. That's fine, but who wants to see him shouting/rapping in concert at a venue like glasto?! I'm sure Jay-Z speaks to inner city youth in New York but I've never been impressed with him otherwise.
Also him and Beyonce are like Beauty and the Beast. That guy is hideous! Low blow but true.

I think Noel's right, nothing to do with being rascist but the fact is that most people outside the US don't like the music Jay Z, Fifty Cent, Kayne West, et all make. If any of these were on a bill, let along headlining, there is no way I'd spend good money on tickets.
I saw U2 in Sydney last year (or was it year before) and Kayne West was on the bill. Only a die hard bunch at the front took any notice the rest of us kept talking and his music was just a distraction, it was just garbage anyway. Honestly people around me were complaining about "what's this crap" Most of the comments I heard was that it was ridiculous for a rock band like U2 to have a support act so unlikely to appeal to their audience. Must have been Bono trying to be cool. Aussies aren't rascist either.
I know Noel goes for the headlines but he his totally right this time. I am open minded about music but I just can't see the appeal in this type of music. Iv'e tried but it leaves me cold. I am pretty sure the Glastonbury target audience would feel the same. Totally wrong support base to expect a hip act to appeal. What were the organisers thinking???

I saw Kanye West open for the Stones in NYC and even he admitted on stage he wasn't right for the crowd.
I'm sure if Brooks and Dunn or some other country act were booked Noel would be outspoken about that also. If a festival has become what it is, why incorporate new genres. It ruins the flavour.

I agree with Noel... Glasto is a rock event I'm not being segregative but Hip hop doesn't fit there As for Noel being a Hasbeen these journalists/editors should realize that Noel's opinion still counts and Oasis is still a major act after all those years...
Oh well

The more I think about it the more it pisses me off. What is racist about that? He said it is a rock festival, not black or white. You aren't going to have Josh Groban headlining are you? Anyone can do rock music, Chuck Berry started the whole thing. What the hell.

i can't understand all that fuss. so booking jayz lowered the demand for tickets, because it is a hip hop act. and most people who visit glasto like rock music. so fucking what's the deal in saying that? plus as far as i can remember, the battle between hip hop artists is a fundamental part of hip hop culture. and i think it is totally ridiculous, that people who make lyrics about bitches, hos, bling bling and why your mom is fatter than my mom now feel that offended just because someone told them, that he doesn't like their music! hip hop artists... fucking grow up!

Again, it's one comment by one man. I've read plenty of other comments by actual festival goers talking about how they weren't going to Glasto, some being vets of up to ten years (And there comments don't always revolver around Jay-Z, mind).
Again, it's one comment and the people making a big deal out of it and fucking thick.
Plus, this year's line up overall is pretty shitty compared to last year's.

So all you Brits out there - is Noel correct in saying the people that usually pay to go to glastonbury arren't buying tickets to see Jay-Z? Yep. Glastonbury ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS sells out in a few hours. This year, tickets went on sale at 9am on Sunday (6th April) and there were still tickets on sale on the Monday afternoon. Can't say for sure that this was the reason, but it seems to be that way. Nothing against Jay-Z, but I can't see the usual Glastonbury crowd wanting to see him to be honest.

Laughable... Noel speaks the truth, Emily Eavis gets offended (coupled with the fact that she's probably perturbed with the show not being sold out) says something stupid, media exploits it. That simple. Yesterday's news by this weekend

i love the way it all blows up when noel speaks = people know he's always right so they have to try and hit back with something and its always rubbish. oasis havent had much success at glastonbury...so what? thats the best they come back with. so poor its untrue. when the new oasis album comes out people will realise oasis were and always will be the best rock n roll band that britain has ever produced!

That's the culture in the US. A white person says they don't like a certain thing about a black person - they're racist. Noel basically said there's no place for hip-hop at Glasto. I don't believe that is true....I think there's a place for it - but I don't think Noel is being racist. I think it was all taken out of proportion in order to:
a) sell tickets b) promote Jay-Z c) be "Anti-Brit" and "Pro-US" - anything to get 'mericans fired up.

FUCK ANYBODY WHO SAYS THAT HIP HOP IS DEAD.
there is much underground hip hop that thrives. Just because you dont hear it on the radio doesn't mean its dead.

. oasis havent had much success at glastonbury...so what? Oasis' 94 and 95 sets were great. It's only the 04 set that was a "a lumpen, turgid mess of a set", as some may call it.
