the Libertines didn't have much impact in the United States which is why I called them underrated in the 'underrated bands' thread in the 'Rock'n'Roll Star' section to which I was dismissed by another Artic Monkey fan.... and yes, the Libertines are a joke now, at least Pete Doherty is but whenever they need money they'll reform and headline summer festivals. God bless. Doherty is a joke now, has been for almost 10 years. Its sad really

Good point. In America I don't think music has any impact on people's fashion anymore, at least not with rock n roll. Perhaps hip-hop but I'm not really sure. When I was in High School (1996-2000) people did dress like their musical heroes. Plenty of Nirvana wannabes, Green Day punks, Pearl Jam flannels, Smashing Pumpkins zero t-shirts and Oasis cool kids. Oh yeah, people even dressed like Dave Matthews Band (hemp necklaces, birkenstocks and tie dye shirts). I will never understand the obsession so many people had with DMB.....ever. It does in england to a degree. Well i say that but its just kids at 16/17 who listen to the courteeners and miles kane running round calling themselves mods. Hahahahahaha mods. That is funny. I guess you have a point, I was 16-17 years old when people were dressing like that. When you grow up, enter the real world, you tend to dress like an "adult". You gotta put the flannels and zero t-shirts away.

Im looking at the bigger picture not just the tunes. the libertines change peoples lives, made them believe in something, changed the way people dressed just like oasis did, the monkeys never really had that. Even though they are a fantastic band Even looking at the bigger picture and especially when you consider the tunes, to even compare them to oasis is crazy talk. They came and went while Oasis were still about. To be honest, after joining this site i have re-found my love for Oasis even though it never really went away, and even though i really like the Arctic's i would have to admit they dont even start to compare to Oasis in my mind. But to their credit they are still going strong. They don't have the attitude or swagger of Oasis but to be fair to them they do have a lot of good music IMO, which is whats its really all about. Libertines on the other hand have 2 albums which are pretty shit and thats all.

Dont get me wrong im not calling the monkeys crap theyre a great band who are getting better, i just feel the libertines had a bigger influence on people imo

I am looking forward to the Monkeys new album. I was very impressed with their 4th album after being underwhelmed by albums #2 and #3. Took me a good while to get into humbug but it really is a great album, and some of their b-sides from that era are top quality also. And the 2nd album id sort of a progression from the 1st to the 3rd IMO but again with some great b-sides. What makes them so good for me is they can do the slow ones and the faster, harder tunes also, often even in the same song. They have their own style and some of Turners lyrics are just genius. I can't even pick their best songs because they have so many.
Lay off the Radiohead and get back onto FWN and Humbug man.

I don't think I can "lay off" with Radiohead. I'm just as invested with them as Oasis with equal service time with both.............. I do like the Submarine soundtrack and always found it curious Alex turner co-wrote so many tunes off Miles Kanes' debut album. Ever wish some of them were Monkeys tunes?

Arctic monkeys are not or will ever be the OASIS of their generation Just sayin ya know?
Good band ,, not now or ever be defined as a band that made a generation dress , talk , act ... That's what oasis did. So all other stuff aside answer to thread NO

Noel Gallagher has heaped praise on fellow northerners Arctic Monkeys, giving them the ultimate accolade of comparing them to Oasis.
The Oasis lynchpin was inspired after seeing the Monkeys at their final tour date at London’s Brixton Academy.
But while he was full of kind words for the Sheffield lads, he said that The Libertines had it, then lost it.
Speaking about Arctic Monkeys, 38-year-old Noel said: “They’re an amazing band and they’re northerners, like us.
“I look at these and I know they’re not going to piss it away, because they’re solid, they love each other those four.
“And us northerners don’t fuck it up. I stood out in the front in Brixton with all the sweaty people and there’s only two bands I’ve done that for.
“I saw The Libertines at The Forum and they had something for a while, but the f**ked up.
“But watching that, they’re the only two things that I’ve seen since Oasis that had what we had and The Libertines lost it.”
He continued to the Daily Star: “They (Arctic Monkeys) have proved to me that youth culture is alive.
“If that’s the music that the kids are making then I’m happy for the kids. And I’m happier because I didn’t feel old at their gig.”

Fair play i've never seen that before tbh, but still i just dont link them to oasis in any way what so ever, more like a bad mix of smiths and sex pistols. Both bands which i love as well but i don't know why i just don't like the libertines bar the odd song. For me the music must be there as well and they come up short in that respect IMO

He's usually spot on though, especially about the monkeys

But the UK didn't change there lingo there hair. Is all I mean on that ..that's when a band defines a generation. Music , style ,culture , ya know ?
