When will it grow up?
Don't get me wrong, there are currently some good US bands, and some fantastic bands from the last decade.
The 90s seemed to be the best time of American music: -Third Eye Blind -Smashing Pumpkins -Eve 6 -Saves the Day -Green Day (now shit since they became so commercial and political) -Blink 182 (heh, only bc i was a young teen at the time, but they dont compare to anything significant though)
And now really the only good US band are The Killers....and even they aren't mind blowingly good
While England seems to be the best for music. There seems to be 3 waves of Brit-Pop movement
1960s ("British Invasion") -Beatles -Kinks -The Jam
Late 80s/1990s ("Brit Pop") -Blur -Oasis -Stone Roses -Smiths
Late 2000s -- Dare I say 2010s ("Indie") -Twang -Holloways -Bloc Party -Oasis still -Coldplay -Kasabian
It's just so frustrating. Being born and having lived in London, i still have many mates from there. And I keep in contact with everything British. Fuck, I even identify myself as British still. And I hear about all these festivals: T In The Park, Knebworth, Glastonbury etc
It annoys me so much that the only American music here is predominately rap, with some crap teeny emo music (Fall Out Boy stuff)
The US seems to be stuck in this rap phase for a decade now. What I'm getting at is: Do you think America will ever get out of it in the near future, and start producing real rock bands again?
It's hard being a die hard Oasis fan in America, as we all know. But it's likewise as hard being just a rock fan. None of my friends like rock. Every party and club there's only rap music. UGH
And the passion in England. I though it was only confined to football -- that unique atmosphere that you dont get in any American sports. But no, it also applies to music. You never see an American band playing in American stadiums with fans singing their heart out -- as you see with Oasis, for example.
It's just so frustrating.
(Yes, Bloc Party is nowhere near as good as Oasis or The Jam etc, but these indie type of bands we see now are the best we currently have. And almost all are coming from England -- and very few make it over here)
Don't get me wrong. The occ rap track is ok. Some are done very cleverly. But most are about shooting, killing, degrading women -- all moronic. And the image they depict: shorts down to your ankles, "bling", the ghetto slang -- none of that's cool for fucks sake. It's sheer stupidity.
I guess the people who follow rap and mimick the above image is the US version of Chavs. But to an even larger extent
One day i'm gonna be rockin Hampstead again, and I can't fucking wait for that. While America is better than England, London is better than any city in America. Simple as.

The 90s the best time for American music? What the fuck man. What about the 20s to the 50s? You wouldn't have any of those bands without blues, jazz, and rock n roll. The 90s was one of the worst for America. And the UK charts are hardly any better.
Best selling albums of 2007: 1. Amy Winehouse, Back to Black 2. Leona Lewis, Spirit 3. Mika: Life in Cartoon Motion 4. Take That, Beautiful World 5. Westlife, Back Home 6. Eagles, Long Road Out of Eden 7. Kaiser Chiefs, Yours Truly Angry Mob 8. Arctic Monkeys, Favourite Worst Nightmares 9. Timbaland, Shock Value 10. Rihanna: Good Girl Gone Bad
Joke of a thread, really.

1980s - Van Halen, Ratt, motley crue, poison, cinderalla, slaughter, billy idol, warrant.
This era of metal had the best guitar work our country has ever seen. Grunge, nu-metal, and emo as well as indie shit have all but killed the guitar solo. That's the problem with music.

ugh, i never said America never produced any good bands or artists
All I'm saying is that currently, and for the last 10 years, America has been disappointing, and it's been Brit dominated.
If ANY yank is on this board, surely he/she would acknowledge that the music over here is dominated by rap.

1960s ("British Invasion") -Beatles -Kinks -The Jam Good to see The Jam there. Anyway, if you don't like what's currently being made you know what you should give a try to? check some music from the last 5 decades!! well, from the 50's to the 90's Fuck, there's soo much great music already that instead of complaining, you should do some research and pretty soon you'll find yourself wondering ''why the fuck was I wasting my time with shit like The Twang!''. And sure, we all would like a great band for our generation, something that belongs to us and us only, but if there isn't one, so what? Seriously, so much great music and no time to hear it all. I suggest you to start right now.

It seems you need to do more listening than thinking, not just in terms of music.

Well it's not cool for US ppl to have him as a citizen What should we do I'm not much into listening to new bands right now but I'm pretty sure that there are quality musicians/artists on both sides of the ocean And hell, lots of VERY influential musicians were americans! Some ppl here certainly know more about them than me but we can just list the obvious ones such as Elvis, Jimmy Hendrix or Johnny Cash I think that virtually 90% of current bands and artists cite Johnny Cash as a major influence! I even had that game with a friend of listing all the people that were citing JC ;D

Why do you hate to being an American or American music live4evr?
Like Mia said, you can't avoid the Motown. Think about what they brought to loads of British musicians like Weller, Amy Winehouse etc.
and you've got great bands in the US as well. I really love The National and Cat Power, they're really great.
