hhmmmm, is the external case an actual media player with dvd/stereo connections etc or just a regular enclosure? If they said it was burnt out did they give any more info? I'm guessing that means it will no longer spin, but maybe just maybe the data is still viable on the actual disc. If you don't mind spending the money I woud try taking it to a different PC repair shop, in fact I might steer clear of the big names like currys and PC world etc in favor of a small independant shop and ask them for help, maybe they would be willing to try and not charge you if it can't be repaired. I also post around on a really good tech support forum (I know, I'm a total geek ) I will ask people there for you.

did you just burn out the circuit board in the external hard drive? if so you can just order a new circuit board and switch it out but it may cost the same as buying a new hard drive, but i know you want to get all the data restored so it maybe worth it.

so far I got two replies -
1) Need more info as to what burned out means and need more details as to the crash. Otherwise its just guessing which can do more harm than good.
2) We definitely need more info indeed just like the last person said. Also Ive dealt with external hdds before and sometimes its not the hdd that is inside which isnt the problem, its the controller on the external enclosure.
So if you can you give me any more details I will pass them onto the guys on the forum. I work at a Uni and I could ask my IT guys to have a look at it if you want to post it to me? I promise I'm reliable as I could really go for some DVD's!
