I am a freelance correspondent for the NME and recently a few of us were given the opportunity to hear samples and ask questions about the newest Oasis album. I was one of the lucky few to sit in on one of these sessions with Oasis management, Noel (via speaker phone), Dave Sardy, and a representative from UMG. Below are my notes that will be featured in an article for the next issue. The plane ride home was awful, as I really want to hear the full thing. This was not a publicized appearance as it's an industry preview for magazines. Album title: Across The Spectrum Release Date: May 2008. (tentative May 19) First single: undecided, release in April. Tracklisting: 1. Is It You? (instrumental) 2. Stop The Clocks w. Noel, v. Noel 3. The Servant of the Gun w. Noel, v. Liam 4. Love, True Love w. Noel, v.by Noel 5. The Boy With the Blues w. Liam, v. Liam 6. Reach Out w. Archer, v. Noel/Liam trade off 7. Step Into The Light w. Noel, v. Liam 8. Out of Time w. Liam, v. Liam 9. Selfless and Hopeless w. Bell, v. Liam 10. I Want To Live A Dream In My Record Machine w. Noel, v. Noel/Liam trade off Facts: - Noel was asked about the influences on this record, while the assembled audience only got to hear 30-45 second samples of almost every track, it was clear the direction the album took. It's heavy on backbone (basslines and percussion elements), and easily the darkest album they've ever recorded. Noel stated that the main influences were acts like Primal Scream and the early 80s Manchester scene. Noel also stated that Kasabian were an influence. - The band wanted to make an album that would open minds, but also allow you to dance without alienating their fanbase. They believe they've accomplished that. - More than 30 songs were considered for inclusion, they chose the 10 because they believed they flowed the best as an album. Some of the remaining songs will be b-sides while some may be held over for another record in 2009 (!) or shelved. - Stop The Clocks was the hardest song to record, they first recorded it as a band during a session in between Heathen Chemistry and Don't Believe the Truth, but never got it the way they wanted. They added in a harmonium and strings this go around. Has a "Masterplan" type of feel to it. Very earthy and beautiful song. - The opening instrumental is incredible. The bassline is very thick and has a very Kasabian-esque type of feel. Similar to Club Foot in a way, but only reminiscent. After the sample was played, Noel remarked "It goes somewhere very fast, you'll see." It's 5+ minutes long. - The Servant of the Gun was inspired by the mid-60s spaghetti western films by Sergio Leone, and it's melody is pushed by a 12-string guitar and acoustic bass, and there is also a harmonica. Has a Dylan type of feel to it. Shortest song on the record according to Sardy, but there is a long form version that may be released if it's tapped for a single, but will not be the lead single. - Reach Out is the classic Oasis anthem on the record, "Reach out, and when you see me coming, you'll know that I'm the one". That is a main line of the chorus and Liam has never sounded better. This is the biggest surprise according to Noel on the record, and he says it would easily be on Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory. This unquestionably will be a single, candidate for lead, but most likely 2nd in the heart of the summer. - Love, True Love is something most fans probably have heard. It's not changed much from the LDSMD film where it was "demoed", and heard "fleshed out", it sounded very crisp and personal, it's been recorded properly, but the vocal syntax is very much intact to this.. - Selfless and Hopeless is the DARKEST tune Oasis have ever recorded. It's very visceral and has 3 or four guitars on top of a MASSIVE drum and bass line. Noel said that the bridge "will f*** with your head". It was partly inspired by Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll" and has similar tempo. - Record Machine is not your standard Oasis album closer. It's a builder, but unlike others. We actually got to hear 1:30 of this one as it's total running time is 10:49 after mix. They are working on an edit for radio play and it's a candidate for first single. Has an insanely catchy riff and Liam muttering "dream..dream....live in a dream.." at one point. Psychedelic to say the least. Step Into the Light, Boy With the Blues and Out of Time were not sampled as they are still mixing those tracks, and want to surprise with them. Boy With the Blues is a likely single. The tour was asked about by the representative from Gig magazine and one of the management people said "Summer festivals are being considered, but it will begin in the UK/Europe in stadiums and arenas, head stateside for 2 months, back to the UK for a early fall arena tour and back to the states to close the year after a short Japan and Australian leg. Other countries are being considered for the turn of the new year". Noel was asked about the 2009 comment and stated that it's up in the air depending on how the tour goes and how they feel, if they do put out another record in 2009, it will not be toured and some of that material may be played on this years tour.

IF this is true, and obviously I can speak for everybody when I say IF, but can't you get fired for this? One would assume only a handful of people heard this shit, and to release it before people can buy this info in the NME.... you know magazine big shots hate that shit. It's about all money.... and your ass if they find out. I would almost gurantee NME (not you) has people looking at some of the larger fansites. They aren't dumb. This is 2008. So my argument isn't with your info, but why you would post this? Why?

There will be more in each of the magazines/papers that will be reporting on this. There was a reason there were people there from all sorts of publications. I appreciate the comment and thought, but I would not of posted it if there was a confidentiality agreement in place. It's posted in note form and will be expanded on when a proper piece is in place. Expect confirmation the 1st-2nd week of February. One correspondant even brought this up, and it was said verbatim "Feel free to tell your friends and neighbors that Oasis have created a masterwork".

I'd love to say yes, but it sounds like a load of shit to me man. I'd be less doubtful if you didn't have servant of the gun on there, that's been floating around for ages. Although I can't say I've heard 'Across the Spectrum' as a possible title before, has anyone else?

If this is fake, it's easily the best I've read. If it's real, then it sounds fucking awesome.
Either way, props to you my friend.

You must be the only British person who would call Autumn, "Fall". I'm not British, actually Swiss. The NME (McNicholas) called last night because this event was spontaneous and was supposed to hit like this. I'm based on the East Coast, USA. Most of the people there, about 20 journalists, were American or Canadian as most of the English papers couldn't get their own people over in time. It was in LA at Sardy's studio. The huge inside story is so awesome. Few are keen enough......to see it that is.

if false, he described an fucking amazing album so fair play to him!
Also we all know that when the real thing comes out it will be a slight let down most likely so the build up is probably the best bit.

This is easily the best "new album info" thing I've read on this site. I wish this could be true, but like I've said before, I won't believe it until I read about it on their official site.
The Servant Of The Gun is an amazing title, and I presume it hails from The Long Time Servant Of The Gun, which was tipped to be the album name for Heathen Chemistry. Actually this would be a great song name and album name.
And I'm not sure that the album starts of with a 5 min + instrumental. Seems kinda odd, but then again, They started off Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants with one.
I really hope that they release official information on the new album soon. All these "New album rumors" is getting a bit over the top now, even if they are very well written.

Marcos Baghdatis just emailed me apologizing for not being able to give us the scoop yet: I hope you will forgive me for not making a post after my match with Lleyton The match ended at 4.30 in the morning but it was still another couple of hours before I made it back to the hotel. But today I will recap what happened... With Roger's match from the day session going past 8 o'clock, Lleyton and I knew we were in for a late start, with Venus and Sania scheduled to play before us. I was a bit tired by the time I got into the match and it was tough to find rhythm. It was tough to lose such a close match but I had great emotions and that's why I love this game. Please StaY Madferit, album details to follow........ Marcos

"Across the Spectrum"?? I'm sorry but I can't see Noel naming an album that. I also already figured the album would be very bass driven since Noel said it's gonna "focus on the grooves" more...so that wasn't too tough to figure out. Sorry man I just don't buy it. Plus you didn't do yourself any favors with that stupid name
