is it just me, or were liam's b-sides for Dont Believe the Truth extremely awesome. pass me down the wine is in my opinion his best song. i think if noel gave a shit about it, he could've turned it into a huge hit. wont let you down should have been the closing track to DBTT.
liam obviously has great talent for writing great melodies. both noel and liam should swallow their pride and turn some of liams ditties into album or even single quality songs

on DBTT I actually liked Liams songs more than Noels (with the exception of The Importance of being Idle). I can't wait to hear his new songs

Yeah! Liam is a great songwriter! I actually think all of his released songs are great! The best one being Songbird, Better Man and Love Like A Bomb. Like you say, he has a great talent for writing good melodies, and I can't wait to hear The Boy With The Blues, and some of his other new tunes. By the way, have you heard this one before? Maybe this'll end up as a B-side in the future? Anyways, here is the link:

Little James: Underrated melody. Okay song. Songbird: Amazing. Born On A Different Cloud: Skip to the next one. Better Man: Not bad. Love Like A Bomb: Magical Guess God Thinks I'm Abel: Quite good The Meaning Of Soul: Crap. Pass Me Down The Wine: does nothing for me. Won't Let You Down: Growing more on me all the time. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Looking at those songs, that would make for a pretty interesting album!

Little James - Underrated melody, shocking lyrics which were rightly derided Songbird - Great, if anything not long enough Born On A Different Cloud - Probably a bit too long and Lennon, but lyrically very good Better Man - As Noel said "doesn't really go anywhere", but is okay while it lasts Love Like A Bomb - Great tune, wish it had been better produced though. Only really fills out when the piano comes in Guess God Thinks I'm Abel - Probably his best vocal on DBTT, top tune The Meaning Of Soul - I quite like this, dunno why others hate it Won't Let You Down - As stated above, a grower. Possibly a bit too Lennon for his own good, here Pass Me Down The Wine - Great rhythm and vibe. Runs out of steam a wee bit before the end

Guess I'll do the same...
Little James: rarely listen to it, I agree that the melody is underrated though. Lyrics are horrible, though kind of sweet. Songbird: Best tune by Liam. Perfect length, great outro. Born On A Different Cloud: Really surprised me, I really like the lyrics and the atmosphere is great. Better Man: Ugh. Uninspired jam session. Love Like A Bomb: Great tune, wonderful musicianship all around. Guess God Thinks I'm Abel: Didn't like it at all at first, but it definitely grew on me. The outro is perfect. The Meaning Of Soul: I dunno why they continue to play this tune, it's nothing special. Pass Me Down The Wine: One of my favorite post-BHN B-Sides. Won't Let You Down: Average, good vocals though.

I think songbird is an oasis classic up there with the bands best work.
Meaning of soul, LLAB, GGTIA and BOADC are really good.
PMDTW and WLYD sound good
Betterman to me needs more work i think its an unfinished idea that they haven't explored to its logical conclusion.
And we can all be funny about little James but its better than anything i've come up with!
At the end of the day Liam as only been writting properly for a few years, it takes time to improve songwriting.

as a guitarist, I can tell you that there's real beauty in a lot of his tunes solely out of their fantastically simple composition (not terribly dissimilar from much of noels early stuff, btw). Songbird and pmdtwine are great examples. that youtube example sounds like another one: 3 chords, simple strumming.

I burned a version of DBTT with Pass Me Down The Wine on it and it sounded great as part of the album and so maybe should have been found a space on there. My only reservation with Liam's songwriting is that he's a little too overtly Lennon-obsessed at times and in the studio the songs are produced accordingly, complete with that Lennon-esque effect on his voice. My hope for the new album is that he has found his own 'voice' when it comes to writing because I think he has a lot of potential.
